COUGARS FALL IN HOME OPENER TO BOBCATS

Calgary – The Bobcats played spoiler on Friday night, defeating the Mount Royal Cougars 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18) in four sets on Kenyon Court.

Roy Ching and Sebastien Steigmeier led the Bobcats with 16.5 points. Tyler Schmidt of the Cougars chipped in 16.5 points of his own in the loss.

After staying relatively close to start the set, Brandon pulled away later on leading by much as eight. A Frank Jones kill ended the set and gave Brandon the lead in the match.

The Cougars did not hang their heads in the second set. They came out swinging and got out to an early lead. Some great work from Tanner Greves at the service line helped MRU to a 25-19 set win.

In the third Brandon led early but MRU would not roll over. At 18-13 the Cougars mounted the comeback getting all the way back to 24-22. Although, the comeback was short-lived as Roy Ching put down one of his 14 kills to end the set.

Mount Royal was clearly deflated after dropping the third and it showed. Ching and Steigmeier stepped up and put the match away. Mount Royal could only muster 18 points in the set and dropped the match three sets to one.

The Cougars and Bobcats will play the rematch tomorrow evening at 6:30pm down at Kenyon Court.
