Griffins make strides, but fall to T-Birds 3-0

The MacEwan University Griffins men's volleyball team turned in a valiant effort, but dropped their second match of the season 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-23) to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, who completed the weekend sweep.

Irvan Brar paced the visiting Thunderbirds, who won the first set 25-22, with six kills and an ace. Marcus Ernewein responded for the Griffins with five kills of his own to lead the home team.

Ben Chow turned in an impressive performance, converted on all four kill attempts in the second set, as the Thunderbirds cruised to a 25-19 advantage.

The third set proved to be the closest played set of the match, with teams trading points often. Mac McNicol finished off the game with a big swing, and also booked four kills, two aces and one block in the final set.

The final score of the third set was 25-23.

Matt Mohler dished out 26 setting assists and added four digs to his stat line to earn the Griffins player of the game honour. McNicol captured the award for the Thunderbirds, finishing with nine kills, two aces and two blocks in the 3-0 victory.

The Griffins will travel to Winnipeg next weekend to take on the University of Winnipeg Wesmen starting on Saturday at 7:30 (MT).

The Thunderbirds return home to host the Mount Royal Cougars on Friday at 9:00 MT.
