CALGARY – The #10 Calgary Dinos were unable to get revenge on the#8 Saskatchewan Huskies aas they fell 3-1 (24-26, 26-24, 21-25, 16-25) on Saturday at Jack Simpson Gym.

Calgary's two losses and Saskatchewan's two wins this weekend give both teams a 9-9 record.

Dino Connor Frehlich was Calgary's leading scorer, recording 16 kills. Veteran Andrew Visser followed that up with 15 kills of his own. Greg Mann had a game-high 17 digs for Calgary.

For the Huskies, Bryan Fraser scored a game-high 21 kills from the left-side along with seven digs. Paul Thomson added 10 more kills for Saskatchewan. Setter Zak Rempel recorded 32 assists.

Calgary will take on the Winnipeg Wesmen on the road next weekend. The Huskies will host the UBC Thunderbirds in the regular season's second last weekend of play.

Spartans-WolfPack Stats

KAMLOOPS, BC -On Saturday at the Tournament Capital Centre the #2 Trinity Western Spartans swept the WolfPack 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 26-24).

For TRU, Brad Gunter was carried off the floor with the score 20-19 for Trinity in the second set with a suspected ankle injury.  He did not return.  At the time, the Canada West and CIS scoring and kills leader had 10 kills in 23 chances with a service ace, three digs and a block assist.

The Spartans were led by Ryan Sclater, with14 kills in 23 chances, hree digs and two block assists.  Nicholas Del Bianco added 12 kills, two service aces, a dig and a block assist.

For TRU, Casey Knight had nine kills, five digs and a solo block.

The WolfPack will head to Regina next weekend with Brandon the next destination for the Spartans (Jan 31-Feb 1).

Golden Bears-Heat Stats

KELOWNA, BC - After losing the second set 27-25, the #3 Alberta Golden Bears would regroup and win the final two sets to defeat the UBC Okanagan Heat 3-1 (25-17, 25-27, 25-13, 25-22) on Saturday.
 
Alberta, for the second straight night, hit over .300 combined as a team, with Jay Olmstead leading the way with 18 kills. Right behind Olmstead were Kevin Proudfoot, John Goranson and Ryley Barnes, who each had 14, 12 and 12 kills respectfully.
 
On the UBC Okanagan side, Nate Speijer had 18 kills and seven digs, putting him at 30 kills over the two nights. Freshman Lars Bornemann added 10 kills and three digs in the losing effort.
 
As a team, the Golden Bears both outdug (50-33) and outblocked (9-5) the Heat over the course of the four set match.
 
With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 13-5 and have clinched a playoff berth in Canada West. Meanwhile, the Heat drop to 4-14.
 
Both teams will be on the road next weekend, January 31 and February 1, with Alberta travelling to Mount Royal to face the Cougars and the Heat travelling to face the Bisons in Manitoba.

Thunderbirds-Cougars Stats

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars were swept 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-19) on Saturday evening by the #4 UBC Thunderbirds at Kenyon Court. Ben Chow of UBC led all scorers with 13 points. Riley Friesen led Mount Royal with 12 points.

The Cougars drop to 8-10 while UBC improves to 13-5 after the win.

Next weekend the Thunderbirds will head home to face Saskatchewan for a very important set with the Huskies.

Mount Royal will stay at home where they will play host to the Alberta Golden Bears. The first game will be Friday, 7:30 p.m. at Kenyon Court.

REGINA – The Regina Cougars had to settle for a weekend split after a four-set loss to Manitoba on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
After sweeping Manitoba in straight sets on Friday, the Cougars continued the momentum with a 25-19 win in the first set on Saturday. But Manitoba (7-11) replied with a 25-19 win of its own in the second to tie the match at a set apiece and won 25-12 and 25-21 in the third and fourth sets to clinch the victory.
 
Manitoba's Luke Herr had 55 assists in the win, the highest total by a Canada West player in a four-set match this season. Adam DeJonckheere led all players with 19 kills and hit .519, while Devren Dear had 17 kills and Kenny Rooney collected 12 kills.
 
Andrew Nelson led Regina (1-17) with 15 kills and a .300 hitting percentage. Third-year libero Jacques Borgeaud tied Herr for the match lead with eight digs, while Steve Carston led the Cougars at the net with five blocks.
 
The Cougars are back at home next Friday and Saturday against Thompson Rivers.

Spartans-WolfPack Stats

KAMLOOPS, BC - At the Tournament Capital Centre on Friday, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack fell to the #2 Trinity Western Spartans 3-1 (22-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-14).

The Spartans, ranked second in the nation upped their record to 16-1.  The WolfPack, who are fifth in the CIS rankings drop to 11-6.

Trinity western was led by  Nicholas Del Bianco, with 17 kills, six digs, a solo block and three block assists. Brad Kufske added 15 kills, with a service ace, five digs and four block assists.

The WolfPack got another big night from the Canada West and CIS leading scorer, Brad Gunter.  He had 14 kils in 30 chances with two service aces, 10 digs and a solo block. Daniel Eiekland Rod had eight kills. Colin Carson had 39 assists, a service ace, 11 digs, one solo block and a block assist for TRU.

The teams play Saturday at the Tournament Capital Centre, 6:45 pm.

Golden Bears-Heat Stats

KELOWNA, BC - The visiting #3 Alberta Golden Bears capitalized on early opportunities over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Friday, hitting a combined .325 on their way to the straight set victory 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-17).
 
Nate Speijer did all he could for the Heat, hitting .304 behind 12 kills on 23 attempts.
 
A concerted team effort on behalf of Alberta saw five Golden Bears notch four or more kills in the game, with John Goranson leading the way at 10 kills. Ryley Barnes, Kevin Proudfoot, and Jay Olmstead would add nine, eight, and seven kills respectively, while Matt McCreary would round out the bunch with four kills on five attempts.
 
The win sees Alberta improve to 12-5, while the Heat retreat to 4-13.
 
The Heat will get their chance at a series split on Saturday, hosting Alberta for the second game of the series at 7 p.m.

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars lost in three sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 26-24) to the #4 UBC Thunderbirds on Friday at Kenyon Court.

Ben Chow of UBC was the match's leading scorer with 14.5 points followed by Colton de Man and Tommy Lyon of the Cougars who each scored 11.

With the loss Mount Royal falls to a record of 8-9. UBC improves to 12-5 with the win.

These two teams will go again on Saturday, 5:00 p.m. on Kenyon Court.

BRANDON, MB - The #7 Brandon Bobcats earned a weekend split with a win over the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1(18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 27-25) on Friday night.

Sam Tuivai paced the ‘Cats with 18 kills, six digs, and two services aces. Sebastien Steigmeier was fell short of a double-double, notching 13 kills and seven digs.

Matthew Schriemer led the Wesmen with 17 kills and five digs. Casey Schouten added 13 kills, three digs, and a service ace.

Both teams sit with records of 8-10, making the playoff picture even more interesting entering next week.

The ‘Cats will host the Trinity Western University Spartans next weekend, while the Wesmen host the Calgary Dinos.

CALGARY – A CIS Top 10 battle went down at Jack Simpson Gym on Friday as the #10 Calgary Dinos fell to the visiting #8 Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 27-25, 16-14).

The Dinos drop to 9-8 while the Huskies improve to 8-9 as the men's volleyball regular season begins to come to a close.

For the Dinos, Greg Mann once again led the way as he recorded a game-high 23 kills as well as a game-high 19 digs. Middle Ivan Kartev had 10 kills of his own and a total of 15 points.

Paul Thomson led the way for the Huskies with 17 points and 11 digs. Both Bryan Fraser and Jordan Nowakowski scored 12 kills and setting Emory Wells added 36 assists.

The Dinos and the Huskies have a rematch on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

REGINA – The Regina Cougars won their first Canada West match of the season on Friday with a straight-sets victory over Manitoba at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
The Cougars (1-16) notched 25-23 wins in both of the first two sets, which featured a total of 16 tie scores and six lead changes. The U of R led from wire to wire and hit .367 as a team in the third set, clinching the match with a 25-20 victory.
 
Joel Legasse started for the second consecutive match and had a season-high nine kills to lead the Cougars. Legasse also chipped in with five blocks and three digs while hitting .292 in the win, while Andrew Nelson and Matthew Lueck both added seven kills.
 
Manitoba (6-11) had had Adam DeJonckheere with 12 kills, Devren Dear had 11.
 
The two teams will meet again on Saturday following the conclusion of the women's match. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Bobcats-Wesmen Stats

WINNIPEG - The hometown Winnipeg Wesmen came away with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-22) victory over the #7 Brandon Bobcats on Wednesday at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium.

Winnipeg improves to 8-9 while the loss drops Brandon's record to 7-10.

Matthew Schriemer led the Wesmen attack with a match high 12 kills. Tom Douglas-Powell was next with 11. Casey Schouten added nine kills and three service aces and four blocks.

Brandon was led by Sebastien Steigmeier's 10 kills. Dan Boutwell was next with seven while adding four blocks.

The teams will now prepare for the home and home series finale on Friday n Brandon. Match time is 7:45 p.m.
