Volleyball: TRU's Alex Davis enjoying time with Junior Nationals

KAMLOOPS, BC — This should be a summer to remember for Alex Davis.  The third year middle with the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack  is currently a member of Canada’s Junior National men’s volleyball team.

Davis and his summertime teammates are back home to briefly before heading to Gatineau later this week for training camp.  From there, they head to Argentina to tour before the World Junior Championships later this month in Brazil.

“I feel pretty good about our team thus far, “ Davis explains.  “ We have a lot of work to get ready for the Worlds.I feel pretty good going into the next part of training camp.  We spotted a few things to address in the Pan Am Cup that we need to work on.”

Davis and his National Junior team cohorts finished second at the recent Pan Am Cup tournament in Panama.  They fell in four sets to Venezuela.

It was the 6’7” Davis’ first International experience.  “ I was pretty nervous and excited for the first matches but after the first few points I calmed down and was able to play my game.  It was a pretty good feeling being able to represent your nation for the first time.”

With plenty of volleyball to go this summer, Davis believes the experience with the Junior National team has been beneficial.  “ I have learned to play a more disciplined style of volleyball which has made me a better player.”

He is the third middle on the team which means he travels but plays in every other match. “I believe that the training has made me a much better player,” Davis states. “ I have been working on my weaknesses. By becoming stronger at those aspects, I’ll be a better asset to not only this team but the WolfPack next season as well.”

Davis is the third member of the TRU program to compete for the Junior National Team following in the footsteps of Gord Perrin (Creston, BC) and Colin Carson (Prince George, BC).
