CALGARY – The #2 Alberta Golden Bears (16-1) id what they had to do on Friday, coming back to dash the #3 Calgary Dinos’ (16-1) hopes for an undefeated season in a 3-2 marathon (19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 8-15) .

For the Dinos, Graham Vigrass would finish with 18 total kills, while Allen Meek would follow with 14.

The Bears were led by Jay Olmsted and Spencer Leiske who had 14 and 12 kills respectively, while Erik Mattson had 17 digs.

Calgary and Alberta will go head-to-head again on Saturday, with the result deciding the fate of both teams’ playoff schedules.

LANGLEY, BC – After losing the first set, the CIS #4-ranked Trinity Western men’s volleyball team rallied to win three straight sets to knock off the #5 Manitoba Bisons 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-20) on Friday at the Langley Events Centre.

The Spartans rallied behind a 22-kill performance from Rudy Verhoeff and an eight-kill and 10-dig effort from Mikiah Schalk to finish the match with three wins in a row.

The win improves TWU’s record to 12-5 and puts them in position to capture third place with a win Saturday over the Bisons. The loss drops Manitoba to 11-6 on the year and will need to win Saturday in at least four sets to have any chance of finishing in third.

Manitoba was led by Voth who had 18 kills while Dane Pischke had nine. Chris Komishon had a team-high 35 assists as well as a team-high 10 digs.

KAMLOOPS, BC - The #9-ranked Thompson Rivers WolfPack and the UBC Thunderbirds went to five sets before TRU came away victorious 3-2 (25-21,26-24,23-25,20-25, 10-15).

TRU improves to 8-9, while UBC falls to 7-10.

Kevin Tillie had 24 kills.  He added six digs, a solo block and three block assists. Mike Hammond had 10 kills, with two digs, a solo block and three block assists. Colin Carson had 29 assists.

The Thunderbirds were led by Milo Warren, with 21 kills,Tanner Kozak 16.  Ben Chow.  Ryan Zwarich had 47 assists.

The two teams go at it again on Saturday at 6:45 p.m.

Bobcats-Wesmen Stats

WINNIPEG - In a match between provincial rivals the Brandon Bobcats came out on top. The Bobcats defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-17)

Brandon moves above .500 on the season with a record of 9-8. Winnipeg's record is now 2-15.

It was a record-setting night for fifth year Bobcat Paul Sanderson. Sanderson finished the match with six service aces and took over as the Canada West all-time leader in service aces with 144.

Sanderson led Brandon with 17 kills on the evening. Kevin Miller added nine. Setter Kyle Dellezay led Brandon with 10 digs and finished with 29 assists.

Ty Loewen led the Wesmen with six kills. Marc Ross and Nathaniel Therrien added four each. Therrien led the team with nine defensive digs. Setter Dominique Pereira filled in admirably for Dan Lother, finished with 23 assists.

Winnipeg will look to close out their season on a winning note, Saturday in the second match of the series against the Bobcats at 6:00 p.m.

Huskies-Cougars Stats

REGINA – The Saskatchewan Huskies scored a straight-sets victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
The Huskies won by scores of 25-20, 25-18, and 25-21 to register their second conference victory of the season.
 
Matthew Busse paced Saskatchewan’s attack with match highs in both kills (13) and hitting percentage (.550). Adam McTavish had 34 assists for Saskatchewan. Geoffrey Zerr (seven kills on 11 attacks) and McLean (six kills on 12 attacks) also hit at least .500 for Saskatchewan.
 
Jamie Wilkins had a team-high nine kills for the Cougars, while Drew Smith matched McLean with five blocks and Lindsey Isaak led all players with eight digs.
 
Both teams move to 2-15 on the season. Regina and Saskatchewan will renew acquaintances on Saturday at the CKHS beginning at 6:15 p.m.
