VANCOUVER - Fifth-year libero Blair Bann set a single season Canada West digs record and posted his 1000th career dig in the process to help his UBC Thunderbirds down the Regina Cougars 3-1 (25-22, 25-15, 24-26, 25-20) on Saturday night at War Memorial Gym.

Bann entered the night just one dig shy of Jamie Benkie's single season record of 258 digs, and it didn't take long for the reigning CIS Libero of the Year to overtake him. Bann had 15 digs on the night, giving him 1,007 for his career.

Demijan Savija led the T-Birds with 12 kills while adding 10 digs, four block-assists and a solo block. Yari Kozel was the top blocker, piling up six block-assists as well as a solo effort.

Taylor Anderson led the Cougars with 12 kills and 10 digs. Brody Wadell and Jamie Wilkins each finished with nine kills.

The T-Birds wrap up the regular season with an important matchup against Thompson Rivers, who they are currently tied with in the standings. The Cougars fall to 2-14 with the loss, and will finish their season at home against Saskatchewan.

Huskies-Golden Bears Stats

EDMONTON - The final regular season volleyball game at the U of A’s historical Main Gym ended with the #2 Alberta Golden Bears sweeping the weekend series against the Saskatchewan Huskies with the second straight-sets victory (25-23, 25-14, 25-22) in as many nights, on Saturday in Edmonton.

In his final regular season home game, right side Spencer Leiske finished with 15 kills while sophomore Jay Olmstead and third-year Mitch Irvine added nine apiece.  Another senior, Tanner Nault, led all players in the match with 40 assists.

Outlook, SK native Matthew Busse continued his offensive contributions to the Huskies with 11 kills on the evening; third-year setter Chris Gilbert notched 28 assists.

The 15-1 Bears remain one game behind the conference-leading Calgary Dinos, setting up what is sure to be an amazing battle for first place in Canada West when the undefeated 16-0 Dinos host Alberta on Feb. 11-12.

Saskatchewan (1-15) will finish off the season against the 2-14 Regina Cougars next weekend.

Spartans-Bobcats Stats

BRANDON, MB - It was a night for graduating players to shine, and many of them did. The #7 Brandon Bobcats leaned on three fifth-year players in their 3-1 victory (28-26, 25-20, 19-25, 25-16) over the #4 Trinity Western Spartans.
 
In his final game in the BU Gymnasium Kevin Miller shone as he finished with 18 kills on the night. Paul Sanderson added to his legacy as a Bobcat with 14 kills, and Kyle Dellezay finished with 38 assists in his final game in Brandon as well.
 
Rudy Verhoeff had a team-high 16 kills for the Spartans while Josh Doornenbal added 11.  Ben Ball finished with a match-high 42 assists.
 
The win improves the Bobcats record to 8-8, while the Spartans fall to 11-5.
 
Brandon will finish their regular season next weekend in Winnipeg, while the Spartans will take on the Manitoba Bisons at home.

Dinos-Bisons Stats

WINNIPEG - The #5 Manitoba Bisons (11-5) gave the #3 Calgary Dinos (16-0) all they could handle in the final two sets of what would end up being a 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 26-24) loss for the home town Bisons.

The loss leaves the Bisons in fourth place in the Canada West conference, while Calgary strengthens their hold on first place in the conference with the win.

The Bisons were led by Chris Voth, who would finish the game with nine kills, while setter Chris Komishon would have 23 assists in a losing cause. Allen Meek would lead the Calgary attack with 15 kills, while his team mate Graham Vigrass would add 11 of his own.

The Bisons will travel to Trinity Western over the February 11 and 12 weekend, while Calgary will host second-place Alberta to end the Canada West conference regular season.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - The Thompson Rivers WolfPack solidified their hold on a playoff position with a 3-1 win over the Winnipeg at the Tournament Capital Centre. On Saturday, 25-21,15-25,25-19,25-22.

The WolfPack are now 7-9 on the season; the Wesmen fall to 2-14.|

TRU was led by Kevin Tillie, who had 18 kills, 11 digs, two solo blocks and five block assists.  Ryan Talsma had 11 kills and five digs. Colin Carson added 29 assists and 10 digs.

Winnipeg had three players in double digit kills.  Mark Ros had 14, Devin Schmidt 12 and Matthew Dueck  10.  Dan Lother had 28 assists.

The Wesmen play Brandon in the final weekend of the Canada West season. TRU will entertain the UBC Thunderbirds February 11-12.
