CALGARY – Two more records fell and the UBC Thunderbirds continue to sit atop the team standings after Day 2 of the Canada West Swimming Championships at the University of Calgary Aquatic Centre.
With 645 points, the UBC women’s team holds a 243-point lead ahead of Calgary (402), while the Thunderbird men (514 pts.) hold a 74-point lead ahead the Dinos (440) heading into Sunday’s final day of competition.
UBC women swept all three spots on the podium in the first event of the night, the 50-metre freestyle, as Hoi Lam Tam captured gold and set a new Canada West record, touching the wall at 25.12 – lowering the conference mark by more than three tenths in the fastest event on the program. Quinzy Brozo took silver with 25.58 and Mackenzie Gunther bronze in 26.04.
In the women’s 400-metre individual medley event, the podium was dominated by UBC again with Emily Overholt taking gold and finishing with a time of 4:39.77. Megan Dalke with silver in a time of 4:44.56 and Maia Brundage with bronze in a time of 4:44.89.
On the men’s side, Calgary’s Robert Hill caught up to Markus Thormeyer of UBC during the breaststroke of the 400-metre individual medley race and the two were side by side going into the finish, but it was Thormeyer who pulled ahead and took gold with a time of 4:16.46. Hill took silver with 4:18.06 and Josh Zakala from Victoria took bronze finishing with 4:22.11.
Josiah Binnema of UBC made a pair of back-to-back appearances atop the podium, swimming to gold in the 100-metre butterfly and, just minutes later, taking gold in the 200-metre backstroke.
Danielle Hanus from Victoria was the first non-Thunderbird women to capture a gold medal of the night and the second to break a Canada West record. Hanus swam a time of 58.89 in the 100-metre butterfly, lowering her own record set a year ago in the Vikes’ home pool
Manitoba’s Kelsey Wog was able to add two more gold medals to her collection as she took gold in the 100-metre breaststroke with 1:06.44 and competing against seven UBC women in the 200-metre freestyle, she captured another first place finish with a time of 1:57.64.
UBC ended the night off strong as both the men’s and women’s 4x100-metre freestyle relay teams took gold while the Dinos settled for silver in both races. Calgary held a lead of more than a second over UBC heading into the final leg of the men’s race pitting the Dinos’ Peter Brothers against Thormeyer, but the 2016 Olympian from UBC made up the difference within the first 25 metres and swam the Thunderbirds to gold with a margin of more than 1.5 seconds.
The 2018-19 Canada West Swimming Championships wrap up Sunday, beginning with preliminaries at 9 a.m. MT and finals at 3 p.m. MT. All sessions will be streamed live on CanadaWest.tv.
