Wesmen End Season With 2-1 Victory Over Griffins

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen wrapped up their 2016 season with a 2-1 victory over the MacEwan University Griffins Sunday afternoon at the Ralph cantafio Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.

Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei and William Brown scored for the Wesmen. Erik Halabi added the lone goal for the Griffins.

Winnipeg with the win finishes the season with a 2-13-1 record. The loss drops the Griffins to 2-11-3.

The Wesmen had 10 total shots compared to seven for MacEwan. Joshua Partaker playing in his final game as a Wesmen made four saves. Griffins goalkeeper Joshua Letendre made two saves.

Winnipeg opened scoring just before extra time of the first half. Second year defender Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei scored his third goal of the season on a free kick after a Griffins foul to give the Wesmen a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.

The Wesmen made it 2-0 late in the second half. William Brown was hauled down in the goal area and was rewarded a penalty kick. Brown made no mistake beating Letendre low to the right side of the net.

MacEwan hit the scoreboard in the 90th minute as midfielder Erik Halabi scored his second goal of the season.

The Griffins put some offensive pressure on the Wesmen in extra time but were unable to score the equalizer.
