Griffins Edge Wesmen 1-0 To Begin Weekend Series

WINNIPEG - The MacEwan University Griffins picked up their second victory of the season edging the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 1-0 at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.

The victory pushes the Griffins record to 2-10-3. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 1-13-1.

Winnipeg had the advantage in total shots by a 10-7 margin. Griffins goalkeeper Dylan Powley made five saves for the shutout. Wesmen goalkeeper Joshua Partaker made two saves.

The lone marker came late in the match. In the 77th minute third year forward Jonathan Alberkant scored his first goal of the season, taking a cross pass from Christian Hernandez, beating Partaker with a low shot to the far corner.

Winnipeg put the offensive pressure on the Griffins in the final 10 minutes. Fourth year defender/midfielder Enrique Garcea took a free pick after a Griffins foul but his sjot was stopped by Powley.

Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei took back-to-back corner kicks with under two minutes in regulation time but neither one of those opportunities resulted in any goals for the Wesmen.

The two teams will face each other to wrap up regular season play on Sunday afternoon. Match time at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
