Golden Bears end regular season with win over Huskies

EDMONTON - In their final regular season game of the 2016 Canada West season, the University of Alberta Golden Bears soccer team edged the Saskatchewan Huskies 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.

Calum Jardine scored his fifth of the season, while Luke Snihurowych notched his first of the season in the win. Sam Whiting scored the lone Huskie goal on Sunday.

With the win, the CIS No. 1 Golden Bears finish the regular season with a 13-1-2 record, having already clinched the top spot overall in the conference last weekend. Alberta will now host a quarter-final match during the October 28/29 weekend, and would host the Canada West final four with a win.

Saskatchewan, meanwhile, fall to 6-6-2 this season, with two conference games remaining next weekend. The Huskies will battle the MRU Cougars and Calgary Dinos at home, as they enter the final week trailing the Lethbridge Pronghorns by two points for the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division.

Saskatchewan opened the scoring in the ninth minute following the corner kick off the foot of Gabriel Buatois. After Jacob Powell's header off the corner was turned aside by Connor James, Whiting cleaned up the garbage in the Alberta crease for his third tally of the season.

Alberta, however, quickly responded. Fifth-year midfielder Victor Karosan found a streaking Jardine, who would grab the stretch pass before blowing a shot past Greg Buckley into the bottom left corner for the sweet marker.

Both sides exchanged changes throughout the remaining half, including a pair of nice Buckley saves off Jardine and Armaan Bhinder, with the Bears holding the slight 11-10 shot advantage.

Snihurowych would score the game-winner early in the second half, making a defender miss inside of 20 yards, before slotting the ball in the bottom right corner from 15 yards out.

James wouldn't have to make any difficult saves in the second half, as the Bears were able to coast to the one goal win.
