Gutsy effort propels WolfPack men’s soccer past UNBC

Larry Read, TRU Sports Information Officer

KAMLOOPS - Playing with only 10 men for most the match, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men's soccer team bounced back into the win column with a 3-0 victory over the visiting University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves at Hillside Stadium.

The WolfPack were led by Ryan Glanville (4th year, forward, Williams Lake, BC). He had two goals and four on the weekend as TRU snapped a three match losing streak.

Over 200 people were on hand at Hillside for the match, the second in a four match home stand for TRU.

The WolfPack played with 10 men after Justin Donaldson (2nd year, midfield, Kamloops, BC) was given a red card for a high tackle on UNBC keeper Mitch McFarlane (5th year, Prince George, BC).  The two were battling for a loose ball in the 31st minute

QUOTES:

TRU head coach John Antulov:

ON THE TEAM'S EFFORT WITH 10 MEN:  "We were playing pretty solid up until that point. I think it was a bit of an unfortunate red card. The guys really beared down and played smart. They didn't give away too many opportunities and capitalized on ours."

TRU keeper Claye Harsany:

ON THE SHUTOUT:  "Well deserved. It was a shame we went down to 10 men in the first half. The boys battled really hard. That was the effort we need game in and game out. A full 90 minute effort is something we have been lacking the first couple of weeks."

TRU forward Ryan Glanville:

ON GOING DOWN TO 10 MEN:  "No team wants to go down to that. We battled through. We are confident and gutsy. Hopefully today's effort shows we can do that.  We were confident we had the players and the personnel to come out with a result.  We capitalized on our chances today. Some weeks we haven't. Hopefully this is the sign of things to come."

ON HIS FAVORITE GOAL IN THE MATCH: "The first one felt really good. It came about five minutes after Justin was sent off.  It was something that makes our lives a lot easier when we can pop one and keep our shape, not having to attack all the time."

UNBC Coach Steve Simonson:

COMPARING MATCHES THIS WEEKEND:  "I thought we were very good the first 25 minutes on trying to play through them. I thought we were breaking their pressure better than yesterday. The red card made the game interesting. They go down to 10. Ryan scored an absolute great goal. Mitch (Popadynetz) was cheating a bit on it.  Ryan's second goal was outstanding and put the game out of reach."

ON PLAYOFF RAMIFICATIONS: "We talk about it as an eventual goal but we need to look at things week to week.  We picked up three points this week.  We are going to try to pick up three every week."

ON MISSED OPPORTUNITIES:  "There are key moments of any game. If you don't take care of those moments they can come back at you. We saw that yesterday and we saw that today. Today was fully in our grasp and we didn't take it. Full credit to TRU but really, Ryan Glanville is the man of the day. He stole the game for them from us."

OF NOTE:

Glanville was named the "TRU Bookstore/McDonalds Leader of the Pack Player of the Match" for the second straight game. He gave the souviner t-shirt to his father Clark.  Clark attends every WolfPack match both home and away.

Lubomir Magdolen (1st year, keeper, Kamloops, BC) suffered an upper body injury in Saturday's second half of the TRU 3-2 loss to UNBC and is sidelined.  Brady Van Ryswyk (1st year, Penticton, BC) was the back up.

Donaldson's red card means he will automatically miss the match next Saturday (Sept 17).

UP NEXT:
