Cougars edge Wesmen to open weekend series

WINNIPEG - The Mount Royal University Cougars edged the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 1-0 Saturday afternoon at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.

Mount Royal with the win improves to 4-1-0. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 0-4-1.

Fifth year forward Cody Cook scored the only goal of the contest in the 22nd minute. For Cook it was his third marker of the season.

Cook took a pass from Justin Anderson-Louch and put a shot inside the post beating Wesmen goalkeeper Joshua Partaker.

Winnipeg's best chance to hit the scoreboard came in the 89th minute off a free kick. Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei took the shot but it was blocked by the Cougars defenders keeping the score 1-0 for the visiting side.

The Wesmen had a slight advantage in total shots by a 10-9 margin. Fifth year goalkeeper  Partaker made five saves in the Wesmen net. Cougars goalkeeper Kamil Zielinski turned away all four Wesmen shots to pick up the shutout.

Winnipeg and Mount Royal will wrap up their weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 11:30 am.
