Pronghorns Score Three Second Half Goals To Beat Wesmen

WINNIPEG - The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns scored three unanswered second half goals to defeat the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 Wednesday evening in Winnipeg.

Second year midfielder Nick Leszczynski (68th min), third year midfielder Stephen Primeau (77th min) and third year midfielder Mike Weigle (extra time) scored for the Pronghorns. First year forward William Brown tallied for the Wesmen in the 12th minute.

Lethbridge (1-0) had 10 shots in the contest. Winnipeg (0-1) had 12 shots in total.

The hometown Wesmen had the best chance to hit the score board first. Fourth year defender/midfielder Enrique Garcea found himself all alone in front of the Pronghorns goal but his shot was chipped just over the cross bar to keep the game scoreless.

Winnipeg made no mistake in the 12th minute. William Brown took a pass from Andrew Kliment and deeked out Lethbridge goalkeeper Nolan French to bury his first ever CIS goal to give the Wesmen a 1-0 lead.

The Wesmen went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

Lethbridge tied the score in the 68th minute when Nick Leszczynski took a perfect pass from from Chris Rushworth and headed the ball past Wesmen goalkeeper Kevin Loewen.

The Pronghorns took the lead in the 77th minute as Stephen Primeau picked up a loose ball and tucked a perfect shot past Loewen to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Winnipeg had a glorious chance to tie the score in the 85th minute as Jashandeep Sangha went in all alone but his point blank shot was turned away by French.

Mike Weigle closed out the scoring for Lethbridge in extra time to make the final score 3-1.

The two teams will wrap up their two game set on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. The game will be played once again at the WSF Soccer Complex North (Garden City Community Centre - 725 Kingsbury Avenue)
