WolfPack Men’s Soccer Ends Season With Tie Against UNBC

A step in the right direction. That's a good way to describe how the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack finished up their second season in the Canada West men's soccer league.

John Antulov's crew went unbeaten in the final three matches of the season. Sunday (Oct 25) at Hillside Stadium, they wound up the season tying the visiting University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves at 1.

TRU finished the regular season with a record of 3-6-3 while UNBC winds up at 1-11.

After a scoreless first half, The WolfPack got on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute.  Ryan Glanville (3rd year, forward, Williams Lake, BC) dished the ball off to Oriol Torres (5th year, forward, Barcelona, Spain).  He got the ball back and made a run to the net. A UNBC defender slid and knocked his feet out from under him and was awarded a penalty shot.

Glanville made no mistake as he went high left side on Timberwolves keeper Tyrone Venhola (4th year, Abbotsford,BC).  Glanville wound up with eight goals on the season.

UNBC got their goal in the 79th minute. There was a scramble in front of TRU keeper Travis Froehlich (5th year, Revelstoke,BC) .  He made the save but collided with another player. While he was laying on the ground in pain, the ball was dribbling on the line. Torres went to scoop it away but Brett Bobier (4th year, midfield, Prince George, BC) got a foot on it for his first goal of the year.

Antulov thought his team dominated the Timberwolves for most of the match.  "Unfortunately in those situations where you don't put away a team earlier it leaves them in and gives them hope.  That's what happened today. Credit to them though. They battled hard especially in the second half.  They didn't give up even though we scored.  I thought we gutted it out. We did what we needed to do and that was end the season on a high note for our fifth years."

The WolfPack honored Froehlich, Torres,  Corey Wallis (midfielder, Enderby, BC) along with Kyle Fertile and Braeden Burrows (both Kamloops, BC) at half time.

"I thought they all battled hard," said Antulov. "I do believe that Oriol had scored (a play waived off by the linesman). They have always been warriors for the five years that they have been here. They are fantastic players and fantastic guys. We will miss them for sure. No question that they were quality players but now it is up to me to try and replace that. It is easier said than done. We have the players here that can do the job."

The WolfPack garnered more wins and more ties in their second year than year one. Antulov says the best is yet to come for this program. "If you look at the more wins and more ties that was great. Even a few of those losses were much closer games. We were in every game. We battled. We scored about 15 more goals than we did last year and most of those key offensive players will be back.  There is a lot of positives to take out of this season. I wish we would have made the playoffs but that is something for next year. Hopefully we can achieve that goal.
