COUGARS DOWN GRIFFINS 3-0

Calgary, AB- On Saturday afternoon, with the playoffs right around the corner, the Mount Royal Cougars were able to defeat the MacEwan University Griffins for the second time this season. Goals from Kyle Houston, Cody Cook, and Sean Daly provided the Cougars with the offense needed for the 3-0 shutout win.

Cougar Stadium Field was the venue on a beautiful October afternoon that saw the 2-6 MacEwan University Griffins attempting to play spoiler to the 6-3-1 Mount Royal Cougars chances of home field advantage in the postseason.

The Cougars had a multitude of great chances early. Not even ten minutes into the contest Mount Royal already had three near misses, and a Jake Vickers shot from just in front turned aside by Griffins keeper Joshua Letendre.

Adding to the near misses, in the 19th minute CIS scoring leader Cody Cook took a pass and turned a defender inside out before sending a wicked looking curving strike towards the net. Letendre looked on helplessly but could take sigh of relief hearing the ball ring off the outside post, keeping the game scoreless and preventing a highlight reel goal.

Keeping the pressure on the Griffins defense, in the 32nd minute Cook made a pretty pass to Drake Rendel up the middle who in turn made another beautiful dish to a streaking Kyle Houston. Houston made no mistake finishing off the tremendous passing play by beating Letendre far post, his second of the year put the Cougars on top 1-0.

Cook, coming into the contest with a two-point lead in the Canada West scoring race, added to his point total in the 50th minute. Breaking in one on one against the Griffins keeper, Cook faked a shot, forcing Letendre to the ground, and walked around him putting his fifth of the year into the yawning cage.

Continuing their dominant effort, in the 71st minute Cougars midfielder Sean Daly sent a high shot from the top of the box into the Griffins net, and his first of the year sealed the win for Mount Royal.

Cougars goalkeeper Kamli Zielinski was only forced to make two stops in his fourth shutout of the season, while Griffins keeper Joshua Letendre turned away six shots.

The victory gives the Cougars their seventh win of the year. The team will look to continue their winning ways tomorrow afternoon as they play host to the University of Alberta Golden Bears, the conferences top team, in an attempt to grab postseason home field advantage in their last game of the regular season.

Meanwhile MacEwan University falls to 2-7, and will also be in action tomorrow afternoon against the University of Calgary Dinos. The Griffins will once again be competing against a team fighting for a home playoff contest.
