Golden Bears Shutout Wesmen, Sweep Weekend Series

The No. 10 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears completed a weekend sweep against The University of Winnipeg Wesmen by posting a 3-0 victory Saturday night at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.

Alberta (6-1-0) opened the weekend series with a 5-1 victory over Winnipeg (1-6-1) Friday evening.

CJ Gilroy (44th minute), Niko Jankovic (70th minute) and Tolu Esan (85th minute) scored for the Golden Bears.

The first scoring chance of the contest did not come until the 10th minute. Alberta midfielder Ajay Khabra's header off a corner kick rang off the crossbar to keep the match scoreless. Winnipeg had a chance of their own in the 19th minute as Amos Ganyea chipped a shot just over the cross bar.

The opening goal of the contest was scored in the 44th minute. CJ Gilroy's header off a corner kick beat Wesmen goalkeeper Joshua Partaker to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead.

Alberta dominated the opening 25 minutes of the second half, keeping play in Winnipeg's end of the field. The Golden Bears relentless pressure paid off in the 70th minute when Niko Jankovic took a pass from Mohamed Teliani and beat Partaker to extend their lead to 2-0.

Tolu Esan closed out the scoring in the 85th minute. Teliani recorded his second assist on the goal.

Alberta registered 19 total shots, Winnipeg managed eight.

Connor James stopped two shots for the shutout. Partaker made nine saves for the Wesmen.

Alberta will next see action at MacEwan next Saturday afternoon. Winnipeg will have the bye next week and will be in action in Lethbridge on October 17-18.
