Strong Second Half Propels Golden Bears To Victory Over Wesmen

The No. 10 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears scored four second half goals to defeat the University Of Winnipeg Wesmen 5-1 Friday night at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.

Ajay Khabra scored two goals (41" min and 53" min), Shanit Shome (52" min), Niko Saler (61" min) and Lukas Penner (69 "min) scored for Alberta.

Braden Silva (75" min) scored the lone goal for Winnipeg.

After a cautious opening 20 minutes by both teams, the Golden Bears came close to opening the scoring in the 21st minute when a header from just inside the box by Shamit Shome was on target but it was kept out of the net by Wesmen goalkeeper Martin Skiarski. Skiarski came up big in the 27th minute stopping a penalty kick by Mohamed Teliani to keep the contest scoreless.

Alberta was able to get a shot past Skiarski in the 41st minute with Khabra scoring his first of the evening to put the Golden Bears ahead 1-0.

Shanit Shome scored his fifth goal of the season, taking a feed from Mohamed Teliani to give Alberta a 2-0 lead. Khabra scored his second of the contest in the 53rd minute to put the Golden Bears in front 3-0.

After both teams made a pair of substitutions, Alberta found the net once again. Niko Saler picked up his own blocked shot and blasted a shot past Skiarski to extend the lead to 4-0. Lukas Penner added his second of the season in the 69th minute to close out the scoring for Alberta.

Braden Silva took a pass from Richard Rundle in the 75th minute and put a perfect shot out of the reach of Alberta's goalkeeper Connor James to put the Wesmen on the board.

Alberta had 20 total shots in the contest. Winnipeg had 11.

Skiarski made nine saves for Winnipeg. James made three saves for the Golden Bears.

The victory improves Alberta's record to 5-1. Winnipeg drops to 1-5-1.

The teams will wrap up their series Friday night at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex. Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
