'Horns blank Griffins 3-0

Lethbridge – After opening the season with a loss on Friday, the Lethbridge Pronghorns rebounded with a convincing 3-0 win over the MacEwan Griffins.

The win improves the 'Horns record to 1-1 on the season, while the Griffins fall to 0-2.

Kendell Wiens, Nick Leszczynski and Chris Rushworth scored for the 'Horns.

Griffins goalkeeper Dylon Powley had a busy day in net and kept his team in the game. He finished the day with nine saves and made two spectacular stops with game scoreless.

Coming off a disappointing season opening game, the Lethbridge Pronghorns jumped out of the gates Sunday afternoon, putting the visiting Griffins on their heels right from the opening kickoff.

Despite their best efforts, the 'Horns could not find the back of the net in the opening half. The 'Horns had 15 shot attempts with 10 being on goal. Chris Rushworth hit the crossbar in the seventh minute from a set piece, while Dom Rigaux hit the post on a great run later in the half.

Rushworth was dangerous all half and would have opened the scoring in the 33rd minute but a spectacular diving save by Dylon Powley kept the game scoreless. Rushworth had six of the 'Horns shots on goal.

After a pair of posts, the 'Horns were finally rewarded with the game's opening goal. Riley Flint hit the post from 30 yards out, then Rushworth put the rebound off the post and as the ball rolled across the goal line, Kendell Wiens jumped on the loose ball to score his first of the year.

The 'Horns doubled their lead in the 69th minute, Rigaux dribbled his way past a pair of Griffins defenders and as the goalkeeper came out to challenge, Rigaux slid the ball over the Leszcznski for a tap-in goal, the first of his Canada West career.

Rushworth was finally rewarded for his hard work in the 78th minute, picking up the 'Horns third goal of the day.

The 'Horns finished the day with 27 shot attempts, while the Griffins were only able to direct six shots towards the Pronghorn net. Freshman Ben Spendlove only needed one save to earn his first Canada West shutout.

The 'Horns will head out on the road next weekend to take on the Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary. The Griffins will play host to the Winnipeg Wesmen in Edmonton.
