Wesmen Take One Step Closer To The Playoffs

The Winnipeg Wesmen Men's Soccer team took one step closer to a playoff berth on Saturday night. Winnipeg defeated the MacEwan University Griffins 3-2 on a chilly night at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.

Winnipeg improves to 4-7-1 and currently occupy the fourth and final playoff spot in the Prairie Division. The Wesmen can secure a playoff spot with a win or tie by the Calgary Dinos against the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sunday afternoon. Lethbridge currently trails Winnipeg by two points.

The Griffins finish the regular season with a 3-7-2 record.

The Griffins opened up the scoring in the 12th minute. Josh Ongaro netted his fourth goal of the season to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.

Winnipeg responded a few minutes later as co-captain Adam Bromley scored his 4th goal of the year to tie the score at 1-1.

The teams went into the halftime break tied at 1-1.

In the second half Richard Rundle scored a pair of goals, his first coming 40 seconds into the half beating MacEwan goalkeeper Adam Hajji. Rundle struck again late in the half to extend the Wesmen lead to 3-1. Rundle's two markers gives him seven on the season.

The Griffins got a goal late by Alex Alphonse to make the game intersting but Winnipeg held on for the vital 3-2 victory.

Senior players Adam Bromley, Scott Ansell, Ross Pinhammer, Jordan Smith, Gaetan Infantino and Miguel Fictoria were honoured in a special pre match ceremony.
