Extra time goal lifts Huskies over 'Horns

Lethbridge – A day after the Lethbridge Pronghorns used an extra time goal to earn a draw, the Saskatchewan Huskies returned the favor but this time the goal resulted in a 2-1 Huskies victory.

Early into stoppage time, David Brown sprung Brett Levis on a break and Levis finished it nicely into the corner to give the visitors the come from behind victory.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 5-0-1 on the season, while the 'Horns fall to 1-3-2.

Brown scored the other goal for the Huskies and Scott Slomp responded for the Pronghorns.

Riding the momentum of a late goal to earn a draw yesterday, the Pronghorns opened the match with some early pressure. First-year forward Kendell Wiens had back-to-back shots but Huskies keeper Micheal Bandula stood his ground on both attempts.

Off a long throw from Conner Brady deep in the Huskies end, the ball bounced off a couple of bodies and a redirection by Slomp gave the  'Horns the early lead only 10 minutes in.

The 'Horns kept up the pressure on the fifth ranked Huskies but could not extend their lead. College transfer Jared Ursulan just couldn't get his boot on a ball that went through the Huskie penalty area and Chris Rushworth's attempt from 30-yards just missed the right post.

Brett Levis had the best look in the opening half for the Huskies, but his low drive from a set piece from 30 yards was handled nicely by 'Horns keeper Peter Desmond, who was making his second consecutive start.

During the first 45 minutes, the 'Horns held a 9-3 shot advantage and earned full marks for their halftime lead.

Like the previous day, the Huskies stormed out of gate after half time and were rewarded just two minutes in. After Garrett Peters was taken down in the box, the Huskies were awarded a penalty. David Brown picked the low left corner on his second attempt after someone entered the penalty area early on his first attempt.

Keeping up the pressure, the Huskies would have taken the lead 12 minutes later if not for a spectacular save from Desmond. Desmond dove to his right to rob Peters from only five yards out.

A short time later, Jakub Rogowski narrowly missed giving the Huskies the lead but his shot from outside the penalty area rung off the post behind Desmond.

'Horns substitute Shlomo Swan-Azmon flicked the ball that sprung Riley Flint on a partial breakaway but the 'Huskies defender closed Flint off and his weak shot went right to Bandula.

Following Levis' go ahead goal, the Pronghorns struggled to move the ball up the field in the dying seconds, with the 'Huskies pinning the 'Horns in the corner for a substantial portion of the final minutes.

After attempting nine shots in the opening half, the 'Horns only registered two shot attempts in the second half compared to the 'Huskies 14.

Desmond and Bandula were both solid in goal for their respective teams and both finished the day with six saves.

The 'Horns now head out on the road for two weeks, starting next weekend with a series versus the Mount Royal Cougars. The Huskies return home to host the Alberta Golden Bears.
