Hood & Russo lead Dinos to sweep of Wesmen

CALGARY – Two goals in the second half helped the University of Calgary Dinos to their third-straight victory, 2-0 versus the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Sunday afternoon at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch.

While the scoring didn't come as quickly as it did on Saturday, a pair of veterans for the Dinos took control in the second half. Andrew Hood netted his second goal of the weekend and was followed up by Dominic Russo. The duo assisted on each other's goals and provided all the offence needed.

A third-year forward with the Dinos, Russo is excited about the chemistry building between him and newcomer Hood and believes the team is starting to get on a role.

"Tactically we are so much stronger than we were at the beginning of the year. We are getting into a grove and are playing well as a team," said Russo. "It is unfortunate we are heading into a bye-weekend, we could have really built on this momentum."

After going winless in their first three games – all against CIS Top 10 teams – the Dinos have brought their record back to .500 with a 3-3-0 mark. Finishing the weekend without a goal, the Wesmen fall to 1-4-1 on the year.

"They had to be a little more patient today because we didn't create as much early in the first half," said Dinos bench boss Brian McDonnell. "We have really shored ourselves up defensively, it was something we worked on all week. We knew we had good players, but now we have some confidence."

Through 45 minutes of Sunday's match, both teams played very strong defence. Five shots were fired by each side, but only three found their way on goal. Joshua Partaker turned aside two shots for Winnipeg, while Calgary's Colin Hasick made one save.

The Dinos opened the scoring three minutes into the second half off a giveaway by the Wesmen. Partaker attempted to play the ball to a defender, but ended up putting it right onto the foot of Russo. The Calgary product dished it off to Hood who walked in and beat the Winnipeg goalkeeper with a shot from the left side.

Nursing a one-goal edge with 15 minutes to play, Calgary tallied an insurance marker. Once again, it was the combo of Russo and Hood getting on the score sheet. Hood's right side shot deflected off the heel of Russo on its way past Partaker, giving each player their second point of the day.

Winnipeg didn't have much luck generating a comeback. The Wesmen's only shots on goal in the second half were from well out and were easily handled by Hasick.

"Our guys were well organized this weekend. Dominick Zator and Jason Genee were great," explained McDonnell.

Calgary outshot Winnipeg 18-10. Hasick finished the game with three saves, while Partaker had four stops.

The Dinos will now have a week off before traveling north to Edmonton to take on the MacEwan Griffins in a pair of games from Oct. 4-5.

Winnipeg is back in Calgary next weekend as they play a two-game set against the Mount Royal Cougars from Sept 26-27.
