Youthful Griffins gain experience from Huskies in loss

When the men's soccer weekend series between the MacEwan University Griffins and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies was settled, the Huskies walked away with two victories, including a 5-1 Sunday win, leaving the Griffins with even more valuable lessons.

The game was evenly matched on both sides of ball in the first half, with Mathew Gillett opening the scoring in the 14th minute, completing a pass from David Brown to give the Huskies a 1-nil lead.

Playing a more disciplined game, the Griffins generated more quality offensive opportunities with Dejan Gajic (Sremski Mitrovica, SRB) notching the first home goal in Canada West for the host team. The third year midfielder finished off a well-placed ball from Youssef Mimouni (Casablanca, MAR) in close to tie the match in the 28th minute.

The Huskies would reclaim the lead for good when the Griffins Matt Hansen committed a foul in the box, resulting in David Brown's fifth goal of the season on the ensuing penalty kick.

With the Griffins committing an own goal, Mitch Bauche (51st min) and Austin Boryski (79th min) rounded out the Huskies scoring for the match.

The Huskies remain a perfect 4-0-0 on the season, while the Griffins sit at 0-4-0. The Griffins will now travel to Lethbridge to take on the Pronghorns (0-1-1), while the Huskies will remain idle.
