REGINA - The University of Regina men's hockey team surrendered three powerplay goals as the Calgary Dinos completed a weekend sweep of the Cougars with a 4-3 win at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday afternoon.
Chris Collins had two goals for Calgary, while Logan Fisher and Dylan Busenius scored as well. Tyler King found the net twice for Regina and Ian McNulty also tallied for the Cougars.
Fisher opened the scoring on Saturday with his second goal of the weekend, taking a feed from Mitch Cook on a rush and scoring with a low shot from inside the left faceoff circle. Busenius also scored his second goal of the weekend before the end of the first period, sending a wrist shot through traffic and past the pad of Michael Herringer for the powerplay goal.
The second period was fast-paced and physical, with the Cougars taking 10 penalties and the Dinos taking four. The Cougars rattled off three-straight goals to take a 3-2 lead, but Collins scored his eighth of the year to knot the score 3-3 after 40 minutes.
King got the Cougars on the board just over five minutes into the second period, taking a feed with tons of time and firing a slapshot that Jordan Papirny had no chance to get in front of. McNulty scored his sixth of the season seven minutes later, banging in a rebound from the side of the net after Papirny made an incredible diving save to rob McNulty's first chance.
Regina continued the run just 54 seconds later, as King struck again. The second-year defender ripped a slapshot from the point after a broken play, but the low shot fooled Papirny and put the Cougars on top. Calgary answered with less than a minute left in the frame after Austin Bourhis was assessed a double-minor penalty. The Dinos took just eight seconds to score their second powerplay goal of the game, as Collins walked right in front and slid it past Herringer.
The winner came at the 11:28 mark of the third period on another Calgary powerplay. Cain Franson set up Collins who was barely above the goal line, and Collins unleashed a one-timer to the short side that beat Herringer upstairs.
The Cougars tried to rally in the dying minutes but a stout Dinos defence held them off the board.
Herringer made 42 saves on the afternoon as Calgary outshot Regina 20-2 in the third period. Papirny made 23 saves for his second win of the weekend.
Regina (3-21-2) will close the regular season next weekend in Lethbridge against the Pronghorns. The Dinos will host Manitoba as they sit four points clear of Lethbridge for the final Canada West playoff spot.
