REGINA - The University of Regina men's hockey team fell to the No. 1 Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon, as the visitors skated to a 4-1 win at The Co-operators Centre.

Riley Kieser had a goal and an assist while teammates Jamie Crooks, Lucas Nickles and Clayton Kirichenko also scored. Cody Fowlie replied for the Cougars with assists from Jordan Burns and Austin Bourhis.

Dawson MacAuley had a strong showing in his first appearance of the season between the pipes for Regina, stopping 45 shots against a swarming Alberta attack. Zach Sawchenko made 19 saves as the Golden Bears completed the sweep of Regina.

Alberta opened the scoring eight minutes into Saturday's contest as Kieser was able to lift a wrap-around attempt over the pad of MacAuley for his second of the season. Regina answered just 40 seconds later as Fowlie scooped up a point shot from Burns that hit the end boards and flipped a backhanded shot over the glove of Sawchenko.

The Golden Bears added two more before the first period ended, taking just eight seconds of powerplay time to score the first. Stephane Legault fed a perfect pass in front to Crooks who potted his fifth of the season from the slot. Nickles stretched the lead to 3-1 with an impressive rush and high shot to the short side at the 17:38 mark.

Alberta put things away at the 6:21 mark of the third period, as Kirichenko was able to walk right into the circle and put a high wrist shot over MacAuley's glove. The Cougars had a couple of scoring chances in the third, but Sawchenko was up to the task and kept the home team off the board.

Both teams will take a week off as the Canada West bye week is next up. Following that Regina will play host to the Manitoba Bisons and Alberta will see the Lethbridge Pronghorns pay a visit to Edmonton on Nov. 10 and 11.
