NEW WESTMINSTER, BC – Fifth-year forward Tyler Fiddler of the Mount Royal Cougars is the WHL Grad of the Month for November, as announced Thursday by Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA).
Fiddler, who is currently tied for first in conference scoring with 24 points after his conference-leading 15 points in November, is in the midst of his fifth season at the Canada West level and third with Mount Royal after starting his university career with the Calgary Dinos in 2011-12.
The Prince Albert, Sask. product spent all four of his WHL seasons with the Calgary Hitmen, playing 175 WHL regular season games and 35 post-season contests between the 2007-08 and 2010-11 seasons.
Fiddler’s breakout WHL campaign came in 2009-10 when he scored 30 goals during the regular season and helped the Hitmen to the Ed Chynoweth Cup and a berth at the Memorial Cup.
The business administration student was a Canada West Second Team All-Star last season and also helped Canada capture bronze at the Winter Universiade last February in Granada, Spain.
While the Canada West season is now paused for its annual December break, Fiddler is one of six conference players who will compete on a Canadian Interuniversity Sport all-star team December 12 and 13 against Canada’s National Junior Team hopefuls in Toronto.
Other nominees for the WHL Grad of the Month award were: former Spokane Chief Levko Koper (Alberta), ex-Kootenay Ice Austin Vetterl (UBC), former Saskatoon Blade Chris Collins (Calgary), Brett Stovin also of the Saskatoon Blades (Manitoba), former Regina Pat Mark Schneider (Regina), and ex-Kootenay Ice Levi Cable (Saskatchewan).
Canada West, WHL ink new memorandum of understanding
The WHL Grad of the Month program is part of Canada West’s and the WHL’s ongoing efforts to promote men’s university hockey in Western Canada, as well as the WHL Scholarship Program, which provides former WHL players tuition, textbooks and compulsory fees for every year played in the WHL.
Canada West and the WHL are proud to announce the signing of a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two organizations that will extend their partnership through the 2019-2020 Canada West season.
Along with the promotion of the WHL Scholarship Program, the MOU will continue the two organization’s cooperation on the assignment of officials and scheduling of major events among other initiatives.
