EDMONTON - Despite outshooting and out chancing the CIS #5 Saskatchewan Huskies, the Alberta Golden Bears hockey team suffered another one goal loss, this time a 5-4 shootout decision Friday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.

Goalie Kurtis Mucha made 33 stops in the loss.  Rookies Travis Toomey, Levko Koper and Jordan Hickmott all found the back of the net, while sophomore Johnny Lazo picked up his  team-leading fifth of the season.

Craig McCallum notched a pair of goals for the Huskies, while Chris Durand and Kyle Bortis added singles. Both Shaun Vey and Matthew Spafford beat Mucha in the shootout.

In the shootout, Vey beat Mucha low to the stick side for the opening goal, while Lazo hit the post with his attempt.  After a Mucha stopped Kyle Ross, Koper was denied by Reekie, which set the stage for Spafford’s winner.

Alberta had rallied from a 3-0 second period deficit.

With the win, Saskatchewan improves to 5-1-0 and sits atop the Canada West standings, while the Golden Bears fall to 3-2-2 and fourth place.  The two teams meet again on Saturday, 7:00 p.m. at Clare Drake Arena.

Pronghorns-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – Two goals each by Reid Jorgensen and Brock Nixon lifted the CIS #10 Calgary Dinos to a 5-1 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

Despite the end result, Scott Bowles had a good night in between the pipes for the Pronghorns. The fifth-year netminder made 31 saves and saved it from being a more lopsided score.

A game misconduct to Ryan Pottruff would send him to the showers early after he was called for a knee on the Dinos’ Dylan Hood. This set up a five-minute power play for Calgary which they converted on. Hood returned to the game in the second period.

Lethbridge got its goal from Justin Hollinger as Calgary outshot Lethbridge in the game 36-12.

The Dinos and Pronghorns complete this two-game set on Saturday as they travel to Lethbridge.
