Dinos-Thunderbirds Stats

by Canada West Athletics

EDMONTON - In Vancouver, Justin McCrae completed a four-goal blitz by UBC on rookie Dinos netminder Jacob DeSerres at 17:50 of the second period, giving the Thunderbirds their initial victory of the 2011-12 campaign, 4-3 over Calgary on Saturday night at the Doug Mitchell Winter Sports Centre.

Also scoring for the home side were Jordan Inglis, along with Cole Wilson and Scott Wasden, who each added an assist, as the T-Birds scored four times on just 16 shots through the first 40 minutes.

Replying for Calgary were third-year North Vancouver native Taylor Stefishen, with two for the second straight night, and Tyler Fiddler.

Stefishen's goal early in the third period brought the Dinos to within one, but veteran UBC netminder Jordan White stopped 10 shots in the final frame and 30 of 33 overall to earn the victory. For Calgary, DeSerres took the defeat, while reigning CIS Goaltender of the Year, Dustin Butler, blanked the T-Birds over the final 20 minutes.

DeSerres is now of three Calgary goalies to start this season for the Dinos (1-3-0) in the first two weeks. UBC is now 1-0-1 on the season, alone in third place in the Canada West standings.

UBC travels to Lethbridge for a pair of games, Oct. 14 and 15, with the Pronghorns (0-1-0), which have not played since being involved in a suspended game on Oct. 1 with the Saskatchewan Huskies. Both games will have LiveStats and Video available on www.canadawest.tv.

Calgary does not play again until a home-and-home series with the Alberta Golden Bears (2-0-0), which defeated the Dinos in two straight games at last season's conference final.
