Big fourth quarter lifts No. 9 Huskies over MRU Cougars

SASKATOON – Scoring 20 points in the final frame, the No. 9 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies pulled away for an 82-62 win over the visiting Mount Royal University Cougars Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Matched at 21 after the first quarter, the Huskies held a small four-point lead at halftime at 43-39. Saskatchewan extended the lead to 62-56 entering the final 10 minutes.

Saskatchewan started the fourth quarter with a Matt Forbes jumper that was answered by the Cougars' Craig Martin with a three-point basket on the next trip up the court.  The Huskies went on a 16-0 run and Mount Royal added just three more points in the quarter on free throws.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 10-5 in the men's basketball season. Mount Royal drops to 7-8.

Fifth-year forward Matthew Forbes led the Huskies with a double-double scoring 26 points and 12 rebounds. Four more Huskies scored double-digits including Trevor Severinski with 14 points, Jaylan Morgan with 12, Lawrence Moore with 11 and Emmanuel Akintunde with 10. 

Derek Wolf led the Cougars with 21 points in the game, while Ryan Cunningham and Josh Ross each recorded 10. Ross added 11 rebounds for the double-double.

Saskatchewan finished the game shooting 45.2%, while the Cougars shot 36.4%. The Huskies also defeated the Cougars on the boards outrebounding them 48-21.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night on Ron & Jane Graham Court at the PAC. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m.
