Sean Tarver had his biggest game in a Winnipeg Wesmen jersey and led the home side to a weekend sweep in Canada West men's basketball action Saturday.

Tarver, the Baltimore native in his first season with the Wesmen, went for 29 points and 11 rebounds – both career highs for his short time in Winnipeg – and the Wesmen handed the UNBC Timberwolves their second straight defeat, 84-75 at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium Saturday night.

Tarver knocked down 11 of 17 shots in 21 minutes off the bench for the Wesmen, who started a Canada West season 2-0 for the first time since 2013, when they won their first six.

Ryan Oirbans added 17 points for Winnipeg, and Will Sesay chipped in with 14 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Denzel Lynch-Blair had 11 points, six assists and six rebounds.

It was the second straight game of dominating the glass for Winnipeg, which outrebounded UNBC 40-28.

The Wesmen set the tone early outscoring the Timberwolves 17-8 in the first quarter and led by as many as 15.

Rhys Elliott, the Timberwolves' leading scorer a season ago, scored a game-high 34 and added five rebounds and four steals. Vaggelis Loukas chipped in with 19 points and nine rebounds.

The Wesmen will take their 2-0 record on the road next weekend for a pair of games in Saskatoon against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

"We're about to get Into the thick of conference play now," Wesmen head coach Mike Raimbault said. "It's good to get a couple (wins) to start, and now on Monday we have to regroup and look at the areas we need to improve and how to prepare for a tough road series."
