Cougars finish game on 11-0 run, take 82-72 win over Winnipeg

The University of Regina's men's basketball team used an 11-0 run in the game's final two and a half minutes to score an 82-72 win over Winnipeg on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Cougars led by nine at one point just over two minutes into the fourth, but that lead completely evaporated after six straight points by Winnipeg in just over a minute gave the Wesmen a one-point lead with 2:36 remaining. Regina head coach Steve Burrows called a timeout after Winnipeg regained the lead – the Wesmen's first since midway through the second – and it was all Cougars from there.

More specifically, it was all Tulls from there as Jonathan Tull and Brandon Tull scored the final 11 points of the game to secure the win for the U of R.

Jonathan Tull finished with 25 points to lead the Cougars, going 10-for-15 from the field and hitting all five of his free throws. Alex Igual and Travis Sylvestre both chipped in with double-doubles, with Igual registering 11 points and 10 rebounds and Sylvestre notching 11 points and 12 rebounds. Mike Malecha and Stephen Shields both had eight off the bench, while Brandon Tull finished with nine points – five of which came in the final two minutes of the game.

Jelane Pryce had a big double-double for Winnipeg, ending up with 25 points and 12 rebounds despite missing several minutes down the stretch while having what appeared to be a finger injury tended to on the sidelines. Denzel Lynch-Blair added 19 for the Wesmen, who drop to 3-4 with the loss.
The Cougars (4-3) move over the .500 mark and momentarily pull into sole possession of sixth place in the division. They'll move into a three-way tie for fourth place in the Pioneer with another win over Winnipeg tomorrow, or drop back down into a three-way tie for sixth if the Wesmen can salvage a weekend split in Saturday's game. Tip-off is again scheduled for 8 p.m. at the CKHS.
