Wesmen Gain Weekend Split Against Cougars

It was not pretty, but a win is a win. The University of Winnipeg Wesmen gained a weekend split after posting a 76-67 regular season ending victory over the University of Regina Cougars Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.

With the win the Wesmen complete the regular season with a 12-8 record. Regina with the loss finishes the campaign with a 8-12 record.  Winnipeg is currently in sixth place in the Pioneer and will have to wait to see who they will face in the opening round of the playoffs.

Christopher Baxter led the Wesmen with a game high 23 points. Travis Krahn added 16, with five-three pointers. Jordan Clennon added 14 points and 11 assists. Denzel Lynch-Blair was a beat on the boards finishing with 16 rebounds.

Regina was led by Brandon Tull's double-double 21 points and 11 rebounds. Will Tallman had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jonathan Tull added 12 points while Jeremy Zver had 11.

Winnipeg came out on all cylinders in the opening quarter scoring 21 points while holding the Cougars to a paltry eight points. Regina turned the tables in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 15-7. Winnipeg went into the halftime break leading 28-23.  Both teams struggled from the field in the opening half. Winnipeg connected on 37% from the field while the Cougars could only manage 31% from the field.

After the halftime break Winnipeg stepped up their game. A highlight reel basket by Denzel Lynch -Blair extended the Wesmen lead to double-digits at 41-30. The Cougars would not roll over and matched the Wesmen's 22 points in the quarter to trail 50-45 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter Travis Krahn showed his outside touch, draining a three pointer to keep the Cougars off balance. Winnipeg outscored Regina 26-22 in the final quarter to clinch the 76-67 victory.
