Griffins earn first sweep of season; take two from Heat at home

It took until the final home weekend of the regular season for the MacEwan University Griffins men's basketball team to earn their first sweep of the season and they did so defeating the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat 62-59 on Saturday night at City Center Gymnasium.  

 

Both teams struggled early, shooting less than 30 per cent in a low scoring first quarter. Mitch Goodwin led the way for the Heat with five points, while the Griffins closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 12-10 lead after the first.

 

The offensive struggles continued in the second, but it was Ryan May who paced all scorers with six points. May led the Griffins as they took a 26-22 lead into halftime.

 

Coming out of the break, the Heat burned the Griffins from the three-point line as David Manshreck knocked down a trio of long-range shots to give the Heat a 45-37 lead going into the final quarter.

 

After a pair of three-pointers by Mitch Goodwin, the Griffin's found the spark they needed, spurring on an 11-0 run as they completed the fourth quarter comeback. Keith Gerdes netted eight points in the final frame to lead the Griffins to victory.

 

In the final home game of his university basketball career, Lee Danderfer was named the Griffins player of the game. Danderfer finished with three points, five rebounds and five assists. Goodwin finished with a game-high 22 points earning the award for the Heat.

 

Next weekend both teams will finish their regular season. The Griffins will hit the road to take on the Mount Royal Cougars with the first game scheduled for Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. The Heat will head home to host the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves with action getting underway Friday evening at 9:00 p.m.
