Bobcats upset Vikes in Brandon

BRANDON - In their last game of the season, the Brandon Bobcats ended the season on a high note, beating the Victoria Vikes 77-76 Saturday night.

Both teams exchanged blows early, ending the first quarter tied at 15-15. The Bobcats grabbed the lead going into the half 36-33.

The Vikes came back in the third to grab a three point lead at 62-59, but the Bobcats weren't done. Brandon was up by one point with under a minute left to play when fifth-year Kenonte Ramsey made a huge defensive stop, stealing the ball before hitting the game-winning layup. Rasmey drew a foul on the play and converted the free-throw, extending the Bobcat lead to 75-71 with just seconds left to play.

The Vikes Marcus Tibbs answered back with a layup of his own, but the Bobcats Mikee Dosado put a bucket away to clinch the win for BU, despite a buzzer beating three-pointer by Reiner Theil.

Playing in his final CIS game, Ramsey had the hot hand to cap off his career as a Bobcat with 31 points, five rebounds and five steals. Earl Thompson Jr. earned a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards

Mack Roth led the Vikes with 20 points and 8 boards. Marcus Tibbs notched 17 points and five rebounds.

Though the season has been a tough one for the 'Cats, head coach Gil Cheung has been pleased with his team's work ethic on a night-to-night basis.

"I think the effort's been there, but the execution hasn't always been there for us, but tonight we were able to get just enough stops to make it count against an extremely tough Victoria team," says Cheung.

Chris McLaughlin was kept to just 14 points after a 32 point performance Friday night against the Bobcats and Cheung was quick to praise his team's defensive performance tonight.

"We really manned up on defense tonight against Chris McLaughlin. Ali (Mounir-Benabdelhak) struggled a little bit last night against Chris, and it hurt him a little bit knowing that he had 32 points and 17 rebounds, but he did an amazing job against him tonight, as did the rest of our team trying to be as physical as we could and trying to keep him off the glass. It was a great team effort," added Cheung.

The win brings the Bobcats record to 2-18, while the Vikes will enter the playoffs with a record of 13-5.

Up next, the Vikes will take on the Trinity Western Spartans at home. This was the final contest for the Bobcats as they have a bye in the final weekend of Canada West basketball action.
