Long ball leads Dinos to win over ‘Horns

Lethbridge – Led by fifth-year guard Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson's first career triple-double, and a sensational overall shooting night by the team, the Calgary Dinos outlasted the Lethbridge Pronghorns to take a 95-84 win in Canada West men's basketball action.

On the night, the Dinos were 50% from the field and an extraordinary 17 for 30 from behind the arc. Ogungbemi-Jackson led Dino scorers with 26 points and completed the triple-double with 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

Lars Schlueter chipped in with 14 points, while Philip Barndt came off the bench to score 13 points.

For the 'Horns, Brandon Brine led all scorers with 29 points and post Brent Watkins had a 20 point, eight rebound night in the loss.

The loss, the 'Horns sixth in a row, drops their record to 5-8 on the season, while the division leading Dinos improve to 10-2 on the season.

A week after struggling at the offensive end of the floor, the 'Horns hit their first three shots of the night and it looked like they had returned to their scoring ways, opening an early 7-2 lead, but that momentum was short lived.

Jhony Verrone hit a three to stop the 'Horns run and ignite the Dino shooters. During a Dino 17-4 run, German national Lars Schluteter went three for three from behind the arc and paced the visitors in the opening 10 minutes.

During the opening quarter the Dinos were an impressive 6-10 from three-point land and built a 27-17 lead. The 'Horns shot at a far better clip in the opening half than they did all last weekend at 41% but could not slow down the Dinos shooters.

Despite the 'Horns best effort matching the Dinos hot shooting, they could not close the gap in the second and headed into the break still down 10 points, 50-40.

In a sizzling performance, the Dinos went 12 of 19 from behind the arc, which accounted for 72% of their first half points.

The 'Horns improved their shooting efficiency again in the second quarter but couldn't get the defensive stops necessary to cut into the lead. In the half, they were 14-30 from the floor but only 1-8 from behind the arc.

While the 'Horns were able to limit the Dino looks in the third quarter, their hot shooting night continued. Even though they only took eleven shots in the quarter, the Dinos were able to build on their lead and headed into the fourth with a comfortable 16-point advantage.

Of their 11 shots, the Dinos hit eight, including a perfect 3-3 from long distance.

Undeterred by the deficit the 'Horns continued to fight and attempted to reel the Dinos back in. With seven minutes to play, the 'Horns had drawn within 10 when a Zac Overwater three from the wing cut it back to seven with plenty of time on the clock.

The next possession for the Dinos however, Schlueter hit another of his four threes on the night to push the lead back to double digits.

Continuing to claw away, the 'Horns hung around, cutting the lead to under 10 multiple times, until Ogungbemi-Jackson's long range dagger with 40 seconds remaining sealed the Dino win.

The 'Horns and Dinos will complete the weekend set tomorrow night, tip-off is scheduled to go at 7:00pm at the 1st Choice Savings Centre. The game will also be streamed live on http://canadawest.tv.
