Griffins overwhelmed in loss to Cascades

The MacEwan University Griffins were simply overwhelmed Friday night as the University of Fraser Valley Cascades came away with a 123-67 victory at City Center Gymnasium.

 

In the first quarter the Cascades came out shooting strong from three. For the quarter the Cascades went 6-12 lead by Manny Dulay who hit all four of his attempts. The Griffins shot just 25 per cent from the field in the first and fell behind 26-11. 

 

The three-point shooting of the Cascades did not cool off in the second quarter as the Griffins fell further behind. Going into the half, Lee Danderfer led the Griffins with nine points. Both Dulay and Jasper Moedt put up double digit points in the half with 15 and 11 respectively as the Cascades took a 51-26 halftime lead.

 

Brandon Sackey came off the bench and gave the Griffins an offensive spark in the third quarter with 12 points. However, the Griffins continued to struggle to contain the attack of the Cascades as they shot 70 per cent from the field and put up 37 points in the third to stretch their lead. The teams headed into the final quarter with the score 88-45 in favour of the visitors. 

 

The offensive show by the Cascades continued in the fourth quarter. For the game they shot at a 60 per cent clip from the field, as well as from boyond the three-point arc.

 

The teams will play the second half of their series Saturday evening with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
