HUSKIES SALVAGE WEEKEND SPLIT WITH WESMEN

Salvaging a weekend split, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies used a strong second quarter to defeat the visiting University of Winnipeg Wesmen 71-68 Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Down 20-15 after the first quarter, the Huskies outscored Winnipeg 22-9 in the second to secure the lead and keep it for the win. The Huskies led 37-29 at halftime and 57-49 after the third quarter. 

With just 25 seconds left in the game, Winnipeg had two chances with three-balls but Jordan Clennon missed the first attempt and Jelane Pryce missed the other. Between the attempts from beyond the arc, Pryce had hit a jumper to cut the lead to two. But Andrew Henry was fouled and sunk one of two shots to extend the lead to three. Pryce's tying chance came at the buzzer.

Four Huskies' scored double-digits in the victory. Mike Scott led the four with 16 points, followed by Andrew Henry with 15 points and Dadrian Collins with 14. Evan Ostertag added another 11 for Saskatchewan. Matthew Forbes led the Huskies on the boards with a game-high 13 rebounds.

Pryce led the Wesmen with a double-double recording 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jamar Farley scored another 14 points for Winnipeg, while Denzel Lynch-Blair added nine.

Winnipeg finished the game shooting 37%, while Saskatchewan shot 41%. The Huskies outrebounded the Wesmen 45-38.

With the win, the No. 9 ranked Huskies sit at 2-2 in the young Canada West men's basketball season. Winnipeg drops to 3-3 after the weekend split. A night earlier, Winnipeg won 84-67. 

The Huskies remain at home to host the Victoria Vikes next weekend, while the Wesmen return home to host the UBC Thunderbirds.
