SASKATOON - The #3 UBC Thunderbirds fought off a bid for a comeback by the #8 Saskatchewan Huskies to win 84-81 Friday at the PAC

With the win UBC moves to 6-1 on the season, while the Huskies drop to 4-3.

The Thunderbirds scored by committee in the victory with five players in double digits. Brylle Kamen led the way with a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds. O’Brian Wallace scored 16, while Doug Plumb and Tommy Nixon each had 13 points. David Wagner chipped in with another 12.

Fifth-year Patrick Burns led the way for the Huskies scoring 17 points and six rebounds. Stephon Lamar added another 16 points, while Ben Baker scored 14 and Andrew Henry had 11.

The Huskies face the Victoria Vikes Saturday night, while the Thunderbirds travel to Edmonton to meet the Alberta Golden Bears. Tipoff in Saskatoon is set for 8 p.m. The game can be watched live on www.canadawest.tv.

ABBOTSFORD, BC - The Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Manitoba Bisons, 83-59, to improve their Canada West conference record to 4-3, in the Pacific Division.

The Cascades will continue their homestand on Saturday, against the Winnipeg Wesmen, at 7:00 p.m.

Sam Freeman,continued his hot hand, scoring 18 points and second-year guard Nathan Kendall added 13 points and a team high 10 boards.

Stephen Walton led Manitoba, with 11 points and Yigit Ozsayiner scored 10. Caleb Noel pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

#10 Alberta 89 Victoria 54

Vikes-Golden Bears Stats

VICTORIA - The Victoria Vikes men met their match on riday, as the visitors were downed 89-54 by the defending Canada West champion, #10 Alberta Golden Bears.

Alberta's Jordan Baker dominated the floor with 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals. Kenneth Otieno and Sahr Saffa further propelled the Golden Bears as the pair added 17 and 13 points, respectively.

For the Vikes, who were without injured players Pierce Anderson and Vijay Dhillon, the short-manned bench were led by Terrell Evans, who picked up 19 points and eight rebounds. Rookie Kyle Peterson added a season-high 15 points.

The Bears are now 6-1, while the Vikes will drop to 5-2.

The Vikes will head to Saskatoon, Sask. on Saturday to face the Saskatchewan Huskies at 6 p.m. PST. The game will be broadcast live at http://uvic.canadawest.tv. Alberta stays home to face #3 UBC.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – In a decisively offensively oriented match up, all five starters for the Lethbridge Pronghorns notched double-figures to run to a 99-90 victory over theUNBC Timberwolves on Friday at the 1st Choice Savings Centre.

The ‘Horns push their record up to 4-3 on the season, even with the Timberwolves.

Fifth-year Derek Waldner led all scorers with 26 points, also pulling down 17 rebounds for the impressive double-double.  Picture Butte product Logan Reiter added 20 and fourth year guard Morgan Duce put in 16 and distributed eight assists.  On the losing side, Humber College transfer Jose Araujo made good on 5-9 from three to finish with 19 points.

The ‘Horns face another CIS newcomer on Saturday in the Mount Royal Cougars with the tip off at 8 pm.  The Timberwolves move on to play the Calgary Dinos at 7:00 p.m. Games will be webcast on canadawest.tv.

KAMLOOPS, BC - The Thompson Rivers WolfPack are 3-4 following a 78-64 victory over the visiting Reina Cougars at the Tournament Capital Centre on friday.  The Cougars fall to 1-6.

The WolfPack were led by Kevin Pribilsky, with 24 points. Akeem Pierre and Will Ondrik both had 12 points. Regina was led by Connor Burns, who had 19 points and 13 rebounds.

The WolfPack will host the Brandon Bobcats in their final home game before the Christmas break on Saturday. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m. at the Tournament Capital Centre.  Regina will visit UBC Okanagan in Kelowna on Saturday.

Bobcats-Heat Stats

KELOWNA, BC – In a defensive struggle the Brandon Bobcats were able to score 21 points in the fourth quarter, to narrowly defeat the UBC Okanagan Heat 64-59.

Last year’s Canada West Rookie of the Year, Ilarion Bonhomme, had 17 points in the final quarter, leading the Bobcats to victory.

For UBC Okanagan, Anwar Faza had 13 points and six rebounds. Rookie guard Mitch Goodwin added another 13 points and three steals to the Heat’s total in the low scoring game.

Ilarion Bonhomme finished the game with 28 points for the Bobcats, five of his baskets from beyond the arc. Fourth year forward, Jordan Reaves, ontributed nine points and nine rebounds as well to the game.

The Heat drop to 1-6 in league play and the Bobcats move to 2-5. Saturday night the Heat take on the visiting Regina Cougars on Saturday at 7 p.m., and Brandon will travel to Kamloops to clash with the WolfPack.

LANGLEY, BC – With a dominant first quarter that saw the University of Winnipeg open a 15-point advantage, the Wesmen were in the driver’s seat from start to finish as they cruised to a 76-56 win over Trinity Western Friday at the Langley Events Centre.

The loss drops the Spartans to 2-5 on the season while the win improves Winnipeg to 5-2.

Winnipeg had four players in double-digit scoring with Benny Iko earning 18, Travis Krahn picking up 14, Steven Wesley nabbing 12 and Andrew Cunningham putting up 11. Iko also had a team-high 11 rebounds for the double-double, while both Cunningham and Jordan Clennon each had four steals.

For the Spartans, it was Mark Perrin (Toronto) leading the offence with 17 points, while Denny McDonald (Mississauga, Ont.) had 14 and Tyler Lintell (Kelowna, B.C.) had 12. Lintell also had a career-high 13 rebounds. Lintell’s previous career-high for rebounds was nine, which he earned earlier this year against UNBC on Nov. 9.

The Spartans are back in action Saturday at 7 p.m. when they host Manitoba while the Wesmen will travel to play Fraser Valley, also Saturday at 7 p.m.

Calgary 74 Mount Royal 53

Cougars-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – Riding another solid performance by Thijin Moses, the Calgary Dinos picked up a dominating 74-53 win over the Mount Royal Cougars in their first-ever Canada West men’s basketball meeting Thursday night.

Moses put up 26 and hauled down 11 while the defence played outstanding, holding the Cougars under 20 per cent from the field and without a field goal for almost five minutes at the end of the fourth quarter.

Calgary improves to 3-4 with the win, while Mount Royal drops to 2-5 in its first season of Canada West play.

The win, coupled with other action between the two crosstown rivals Thursday night, gives the Dinos five wins in the inaugural Crowchild Classic series. Mount Royal now has three victories, and two games ended in ties. The first school to eight victories will capture The Medal, a 68-kilogram City of Calgary manhole cover, for display on its campus for the following year.

Awet Abraha poured in 18 points for Mount Royal, with 12 rebounds and Nick Loewen had 13 points, 10 boards as two Cougars posted a double-double.

Women’s action between the Dinos and Cougars tips off in the Jack Simpson Gym Friday night at 7 p.m. Both Dinos teams are back in action Saturday when they host the UNBC Timberwolves – women’s action tips off at 5 p.m., followed by the men at 7 p.m.
