WINNIPEG - The #5 UBC Thunderbirds beat the Manitoba Bisons 87-61 in the first game of 2013 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. 

UBC’s Doug Plumb scored a game high of 16 total points. Brylie Kamen added a game-high 21 rebounds and added 12 points for a double-double.

Manitoba forward Caleb Noel earned the Bisons’ high of 13 points for his team in 24 minutes of play. Guard Jonar Huertas earned 12 points in 29 minutes. Bisons co-captain Xavier Smith did not play because of an injury.

UBC stays first in the Pacific Division with a 9-2 record and Manitoba sits at third in the Prairie Division with a 7-5 record.

The Bisons play again on Saturday when they will be hosting the Victoria Vikes at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. Tip-off is at 8:00 p.m., while UBC travels crosstown to play the Winnipeg Wesmen (9-3).

ABBOTSFORD, BC - The Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the #4 Fraser Valley Cascades 90-82 on Friday at the Envision Athletic Centre.

The Huskies improve their Prairie Division record to 7-4, while UFV’s record in the Pacific Division drops to 7-4.

The Cascades were led by Kevon Parchment, with 23 points. Jordan Blackman added 16 and sam Freeman finished with 15. The Huskies were led by Patrick Burns, with a game-high 27 points.  Stephon Lamar chipped in with 18 points.

On Saturday, Fraser valley hosts #6 Alberta and Saskatchewan faces Trinity Western at Langley.

Golden Bears-Spartans Stats

LANGLEY, BC – Thanks to a dominant first half, in which the Trinity Western Spartans opened up a 16-point lead against #6 Alberta, the Spartans hung on to earn a 90-85 victory over the Golden Bears on Friday at the Langley Events Centre.

Trinity Western improves to 4-7 with its second consecutive conference victory; Alberta is 9-2 and still first in the Prairie Division.

The Spartans were led by Perrin, who had 22 points and two rebounds, while Tonner Jackson,, playing for the first time since the season-opener against UBC, had 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

For the Golden Bears, whose only other loss this season came against Calgary, Otieno had a game-high 28 points, while Jordan Baker put together a double-double, with 21 points and 11 boards.

The Spartans are back in action Saturday as they will take on Saskatchewan at 8 p.m. at the LEC. The Golden Bears will travel to Abbotsford, B.C. to play the #4 Fraser Valley Cascades, Saturday at 7 p.m.

BRANDON, MB – A last second turnover cost the Brandon Bobcats a shot to tie the game against Mount Royal, as the Cougars won 76-74 Friday night in Brandon.

Awet Abraha hit a lay-up with just over three seconds left, to give the Cougars a 76-74 lead. The Bobcats final possession didn’t work out according to plan, as Deng Awak forced a steal as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

Abraha led the Cougars with a team-high 21 points, while Nick Loewen finished the contest with a double-double (15 points, 15 rebounds) while Deng Awak finished one rebound shy of a double-double (11 points, 9 rebounds).

Ilarion Bonhomme recorded a game-high 23 points, while picking up nine assists and seven rebounds. Jordan Reaves finished with 15 points, Ali-Mounir Benabdelhak put up 14 points, and Michael Smith added 13 points.

Mount Royal will head to Regina to play the Cougars Saturday, while the Bobcats will welcome the UNBC Timberwolves to BU’s Healthy Living Centre for a game on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

KAMLOOPS, BC — The Thompson Rivers WolfPack have broken into
the win column for the first time in their last eight starts, downing the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns  90-81 on Friday at the TRU Gym.

The WolfPack raised their league record to 5-7, while Lethbridge fell to 5-6 on the season.

Lethbridge had Chaz Johnson, with 21 points, followed by Julian Spear Chief-Morris, with 20 points.  Derek Waldner had a double-double - 18 rebounds and 14 points.

Brett Rouault  recorded 28 points, eight rebounds for TRU.  Kevin Pribilsky had 20 points.

The WolfPack don’t have much time to bask in the glow of the win, as they host the Calgary Dinos at the TRU Gym on Saturday at 7 p.m. Lethbridge will go to UBC Okanagan in Kelowna.

Vikes-Wesmen Stats

WINNIPEG - In a battle between two Canada West powerhouses, Winnipeg won the battle on this night in dramatic fashion. The Wesmen thanks to some last minute heroics beat the Victoria Vikes 64-61 at the Duckworth Centre.

The victory improves Winnipeg’s record to 9-3. Victoria with the loss falls to 7-4.

Steven Wesley led Winnipeg with 23 points. Iko finished with a double-double 15 points and 13 rebounds. Dominique Brown added 11 points.

Terrell Evans led the Vikes with 15 points. Brandon Dunlop and Kyle Peterson each had 11. Chris McLaughlin and Michael Acheampong each grabbed seven rebounds.

Winnipeg will play host to the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Victoria will play the Manitoba Bisons.

KELOWNA, BC - The Heat’s first year guard Mitch Goodwin’s three hit the front of the rim and bounced out as time expired, handing the visiting Calgary Dinos a 59-56 victory on Friday at the UBC Okanagan gymnasium.

UBC Okanagan Player of the Game Anwar Faza led the Heat in scoring with 15 points on 5-9 shooting while grabbing four rebounds in the effort. Fellow guards Yassine Ghomari and Mitch Goodwin struggled for most of the night but still poured in 10 and 11 points, respectively.

Calgary’s Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson led the game with 17 points while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out 3 assists.  Josh Owen-Thomas tied a game-high three steals while also recording a game-high five assists. Big man Thijin Moses was their second leading scorer with 13 points and three rebounds of his own.

The Heat fall to 2-10 while the Dinos improve to 5-6 with their first win on the road this season.

On Saturday, the Heat host the Lethbridge Pronghorns, with tip-off at 7 p.m.  The Dinos will head north to visit the Thomson Rivers WolfPack in Kamloops.

REGINA – The first-ever meeting between the Regina Cougars and UNBC Timberwolves was a dandy, with the Cougars outlasting UNBC for a 76-73 win on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
Paul Gareau led the way for the Cougars, leading all players with a season-high 25 points and adding a game-high 12 rebounds to secure the contest’s lone double-double. Connor Burns added 19 points for the Cougars and fell just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds.
 
UNBC’s Sam Raphael was 9-for-11 from the field – including a pair of thunderous dunks – and collected a team-leading 24 points. Joel Rybachuk had 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists for the Timberwolves, while Charles Barton scored 10.
 
The win improves Regina’s record to 4-7 on the season, while UNBC drops just under the .500 mark to 5-6.
 
The Cougars will be back in action at the CKHS on Saturday against Mount Royal (3-8). Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
 
UNBC will head east to pay a visit to Brandon University (2-9) on Sunday aftenoon.
