LANGLEY, B.C. – The No. 7  Trinity Western Spartans pulled away with a dominant second half, in which they outscored No. 10 Alberta 56-43, as they rolled to a 96-83 victory Friday night.

The result improves the Spartans record to 7-2 on the year while the loss drops Alberta to 5-2.

Jordan Baker finished the contest with a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds for Alberta, while Daniel Ferguson’s 16 points was second most on his team.

For TWU, Kyle Coston had his best game in a Spartans uniform as he tied Jacob Doerksen with 23 points and also had a team-high eight rebounds.

The teams will meet in a rematch Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

CALGARY – With two big three pointers in the final minute and a half, the Brandon University Bobcats pulled away at just the right time on Friday night, beating the Calgary Dinos 77-70 in the Jack Simpson Gym in Calgary. 

Tyler Fidler continued his rebounding tear, eclipsing his yearly average of 12.5 with 15 boards in the losing effort to go along with 10 points. Fidler was joined in the double-digit scoring department by Dustin Reding (16), Andrew McGuiness (15) and Youri Anissovets (11).

First-year post Matt Letkeman had a solid effort as well for Calgary, posting five points, seven rebounds and three steals.

O’Brian Wallace was the high scorer for Brandon with 15 points, while Kyrie Coleman and Isaiah James followed with 13 and 12, respectively while combining for 13 rebounds.

With the victory, both teams move to identical 3-4 records in Canada West action and will play again Saturday, with game time set for 8:00 p.m. at the Jack Simpson Gym.

VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds improved to 3-0 on their current homestand as they used a deadly fast break attack to earn the 84-68 win over the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday night at War Memorial Gym.

Sam Freeman and Joel Friesen were 4-for-9 and 4-for-10 from three-point range respectively. Friesen led his team with 21 points while Freeman chipped in 16.

The T-Birds held the Cascades under 20 points in all quarters except the third, including just 12 points in the fourth, but Hanson saw room for improvement on his team's defense.

Doug Plumb had 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds to go with five assists. Nathan Yu had 12 points and five assists to lead a UBC bench that outscored Fraser Valley's 30-9.

The 'Birds move to 7-2 on the year while Fraser Valley drops to 2-5. The teams will be back in action on Saturday for game two of their series at War Memorial Gym. Tip off is at 8:00 p.m.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - It was a game which the Thompson Rivers WolfPack almost had.

In a battle of 1-7 teams in the Canada West men’s basketball league, the WolfPack dropped a 68-65 decision to the Lethbridge Pronghorns, Friday at the Tournament Capital Centre.

The Pronghorns took the lead 63-62 with 2:21 left in the contest.

After Connor Agnew drained a three pointer to put the Pack up 65-63, Lethbridge’s Wes Chapman scored to tie the game and with a minute left, Derek Waldner laid the ball in for the winning basket.

The Pronghorns were led by Waldner with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Randy Davis had 15 points, with Danahue Lawrence chipping in with 10 points.

TRU was  led by third-year guard Kevin Pribilsky for the second straight game.  The native of Victoria had 17 points in 36 minutes of court time. Fourth year forward Chas Kok with 15 points and 10 boards.

The same two teams play again Saturday at the TCC.

SASKATOON - En route to a 99-48 win over the visiting University of Winnipeg Wesmen, the reigning CIS champion University of Saskatchewan Huskies scored 53 points in the first half.

With the win, the Huskies move to 7-3 on the season, while the Wesmen fall to 1-5.  

The Huskies finished the game shooting 59%, while the Wesmen shot just 28%. Saskatchewan also doubled the Wesmen on the boards stealing 50 to the Wesmen’s 25. Turnovers were also a problem for Winnipeg with the Huskies scoring 33 points off of the Wesmen’s giveaways in the game.

Chabot led the Huskies with 27 points on the night, followed by Barrett with 21 and Nolan Brudehl with 16. Brudehl also led the Huskies with 11 rebounds. Dave Neufeld chipped in 10 on the boards.

Lynden Drayton-Barrow scored 13 for the Wesmen and added six rebounds. Perry added eight points for Winnipeg.

The two teams will meet again Saturday. Tipoff is 8:00 p.m. at the PAC in Saskatoon.

VICTORIA - The UVic Vikes men's basketball team knocked down 15 three-pointers in a 97-69 victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday night.
 
Jeff Spoor led the three-point barrage, shooting 4-for-5, and finished with a career-best 15 points. Overall, the Vikes connected on 53 percent of their perimeter attempts and every player who dressed scored.
 
Spoor eneded the first half with a three-pointer, giving the Vikes a 46-29 lead at the break, and the shots kept falling in the second. Marco Dolcetti connected on four threes, leading the Vikes with 18 points, and Jeff Cullen hit three to finish with 11.
 
Regina's Jeff Lukomski posted the game scoring high with 22 points. It was the highest point total of the season for Lukomski, who is chasing the Cougar's all-time scoring title.
 
The loss is the third straight for the Cougars, since opening the season 4-0. While the Vikes improve to 5-4.
 
The rematch takes place Saturday, with a 7:00 p.m. start time at McKinnon Gym.
