EDMONTON - For 32 minutes it looked like the Alberta Golden Bears basketball team was going to score an upset over the No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds, but the T-Birds turned a 12-point deficit into a five point win in the blink of an eye, defeating Alberta 81-76 Friday night in the U of A’s Main Gym.

Alberta got a white hot performance from fourth-year Edmonton guard Daniel Ferguson, as he torched the mesh for a game-high 29 points, after hitting six of 12 three-point attempts. Jordan Baker, the 2010 Canada West rookie of the year, had 16 points and four steals.

The T-Birds were led by 2010 CIS player of the year Josh Whyte, who scored 19 points and six assists, while Nathan Yu banked 17 points, and Kamar Burke added 14.

UBC now moves to a 4-1 record, while Alberta picks up their first loss of the season, sliding down to a 2-1 mark.

Alberta will get their chance at redemption on Saturday as they face the Thunderbirds one more time, with tip-off going at 8:00 pm in the Main Gym.

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Calgary Dinos 78-67 in their home opener of the 2010-2011 regular season Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen coming off a regular season opening loss at Manitoba last Saturday, improve their record to 1-1. Calgary drops below .500 to 2-3.

Benny Iko led the Wesmen registering a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds). Guard Nolan Gooding finished with 16 points, five assists and four steals. Kelvin Smith added 12 points and Lynden Drayton-Barrow had 11 points.

Calgary was led by Tyler Fidler's game high 20 points and 19 rebounds. Keenan Milburn added 11 points and three assists.

The two teams will meet again at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

REGINA - The University of Regina's men's basketball team pulled away from the Lethbridge Pronghorns down the stretch to record a 94-85 victory in a Canada West game on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Paul Gareau was 8-for-10 from the field and ended up with a game-high 22 points for the Cougars. The third-year forward also pulled down 10 rebounds to register his team's lone double-double. Sterling Nostedt was 4-for-11 from three-point range and scored 18, while Marek Downarowicz had 11 and Matt Campbell came off the bench to score 10.

Derek Waldner had 21 points and 12 rebounds for Lethbridge before fouling out in the fourth. Julian Spear Chief-Morris had 14 for the Pronghorns, while Abner Kamps had nine points and 10 rebounds. The Pronghorns fall to 1-4 with the loss.

The win improves Regina's record to 3-0. The Cougars are the only undefeated team in Canada West.

The two teams meet again on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., following the women's game.

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The Trinity Western Spartans showed why they are ranked eighth in the CIS in men’s basketball. The Spartans rolled into the Tournament Capital Center and downed the hometown Thompson Rivers WolfPack 97-57.

The Spartans are now  3-2. The WolfPack fall to 0-5 in Canada West play.

The Spartans led from wire to wire getting 27 points from guard Calvin Westbrook.  Jacob Doerkson   had 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Tonner Jackson added 12 points. TRU was led by Chas Kok, with 17 points, and Kevin Pribilsky had 16.

The teams meet again on Saturday at the Tournament Capital Center. Tip off is 7:00 p.m. at the TCC.

Bisons-Vikes Game Stats

VICTORIA - Ryan MacKinnon scored a career high 25 points and the UVic Vikes men's basketball team dealt the upstart Manitoba Bisons their first loss of the season, taking a 92-64 decision Friday night.

MacKinnon shot 10-for-15 from the field to finish with 25 points, and eclipse his previous benchmark of 24 set in his junior year. The senior guard from Comox knocked down four three-pointers in the second half of a blowout victory.

Josh Odgen and Eric Garcia shared the high for the visitors, scoring 16 apiece. Sean Maxwell added 10 points.

The two sides return to McKInnon Gym Saturday night to close out the two-game set. Game time is 7 p.m. and can be watched online at govikesgo.com/broadcast.
