CALGARY – The assembled faithful in the Jack Simpson Gym held their breath for the better part of the second half, then let out a collective sigh of relief as the Calgary Dinos kept their playoff hopes alive with a 100-91 overtime victory over the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night.

It was the first series sweep of the season for Calgary, which improves to 8-12, one game behind the Bisons (9-11) for seventh spot in the conference.

Manitoba guard Eric Garcia had a sparkling 24-point effort on the night.

The trio of Garcia, Josh Ogden (25 points), and Sean Maxwell (12) made up the lion’s share of Manitoba’s scoring, with the three combining for 61 of the visitors’ 91 points. Calgary countered with another huge night from Tyler Fidler, who put up a season-high 29 points, while collecting 12 rebounds. He was joined atop the leaderboard by freshman Matt Letkeman, who finished a brilliant weekend with a career-best 24 points after scoring 18 Friday.

The Bisons host Trinity Western for a two-game set next week before. Calgary heads to Edmonton for a date with the 14-8 Alberta Golden Bears next weekend.

REGINA – Brent Malish scored a career-high 33 points to lead the UBC Thunderbirds to a 95-59 win over the Regina Cougars on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
Malish was 11-for-20 from the field and 9-for-11 from the line while adding a game-high 12 rebounds to register a double-double in just 23 minutes on the floor. Josh Whyte added 14 points for UBC, while Nathan Yu chipped in with 13.
 
BC improved to 18-2; Regina fell to 12-8. Both teams have qualified for the post-season.
 
Marek Downarowicz was 6-for-13 from the field and led Regina with 13 points. Jeff Lukomski and Matt Campbell both had eight points for the Cougars.
 
UBC next hosts Thompson Rivers. The Cougars will be back in action with a Thursday/Saturday home-and-home against Saskatchewan.

Golden Bears-Huskies Stats

SASKATOON - Led by Canada West leading scorer Jamelle Barrett the No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies swept the visiting Alberta Golden Bears with an 88-75 victory Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Barrett scored 15 points in each half to tally his 30 points. Nolan Brudehl added another 23 for the Huskies and Rejean Chabot chipped in 22 points. Brudehl also had a game-high 13 rebounds.

Daniel Ferguson was the best on the night for the Golden Bears netting 26 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Baker and Lyndon Taylor each added 12 points apiece. Baker also had seven rebounds in the game.

The win moves the No. 3 ranked Huskies to 16-4 in the Canada West standings with four games remaining. Alberta, in the bid for a home playoff date, drops to 14-8.

The Huskies face provincial foe the Regina Cougars in a home-and-home series next week, while the Golden Bears return home to host the Calgary Dinos.

WINNIPEG - The Fraser Valley Cascades earned a split in their two game set against Winnipeg upending the Wesmen 75-68 on Saturday in Winnipeg.

The victory improves the Cascades record to 7-13. Winnipeg falls to 3-17.

Joel Friesen led the Cascades with a team high 23 points. Zeon Gray added 18 and Sam Freeman finished with 14. James Elliott led the team with six rebounds.

Fifth-year guard Nick Lother, playing in his final home game as a Wesmen scored a game-high 30 points, including six-three pointers. Benny Iko added 12 and Lynden Drayton-Barrow finished with 10 points. Iko led the Wesmen with nine rebounds.

Winnipeg will head west to Brandon next weekend to face theiprovincial rival Bobcats. Fraser Valley will head to Lethbridge to take on the Pronghorns.

Vikes-WolfPack Stats

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - For the second night in a row, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack came close, but couldn’t overcome a pesky Victoria Vikes at the Tournament Capital Centre.  The Vikes downed the WolfPack 78-67.

Victoria is now 15-7 while TRU falls to 4-18.

Ryan MacKinnon led the way for Victoria, with 18 points. Marco Dolcetti chipped in with 17 points including three from beyond the arc. Mike Berg contributed 15 points.

TRU was led by Greg Stewart.  The fifth-year post had another double-double. He had 24 points and 15 rebounds. Chas Kok had 15 points and nine rebounds.

TRU closes out its Canada West regular season next week (at UBC.  Victoria has a bye week and doesn’t play again until February 18th against UBC.

#4 Trinity Western 104 Brandon 45

LANGLEY, B.C. – The #4-ranked Trinity Western Spartans broke the school record for least points allowed in a game, holding the Brandon Bobcats to just 45 points, and romped to a 104-45 win on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

With the win the Spartans improved their record to 19-3 while Brandon sees its record drop to 4-16 on the year.

Doerksen finished with a game-high 21 points, while Tristan Smith had 18. After breaking the Spartans single game rebounding record Friday with 21 boards, Tyrell Mara pulled down a game-high 14 Saturday.

Brandon was led by Kyle Vince who had nine points while O’Brian Wallace, who is the team’s leading scorer averaging 17.0 points per game, had six rebounds but was held to just five points.

The Spartans will wrap up the 2010-11 regular season next weekend when they travel to Manitoba for a two-game series while the Bobcats will return to Brandon next weekend as they will host Winnipeg in their final home game of the year.
