SASKATOON - With 32 points in the first quarter, the #3 Saskatchewan Huskies went on to defeat the Alberta Golden Bears 98-73 on Friday at the PAC in Saskatoon.

With the win, the Huskies move to 15-4 on the season and inch closer to a home playoff date. Alberta drops to 14-7 with the loss.

CG Morrison was the best on the night for Alberta recording a game-high 28 points. Daniel Ferguson added 16 points and Jordan Baker scored 14 for the Bears. Baker also recorded six rebounds.

Canada West leading scorer Jamelle Barrett led Saskatchewan with 26 points, followed by Rejean Chabot's 22 points.

The two teams will battle again on Saturday at the PAC. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.

REGINA - Jeff Lukomski became the Regina all-time leading scorer on Friday, but it was the UBC Thunderbirds that came away with a convincing 111-67 win in a Canada West men’s basketball game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Lukomski hit a patented fadeaway three-pointer early in the second quarter to become the U of R’s leader in career points scored. He moves past Glen Nelson, whose 1422 career points stood as the school’s high since he retired in 1985.

UBC's Nathan Yu and Josh Whyte scored 22 and 21 points, respectively. Brent Malish put back 15. For Regna, Marek Downarowicz paced the hosts with 19 points while Paul Gareau and Lukomski each tallied 13.

Regina (12-7) and the T-Birds (17-2) play again on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.

LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western’s Tyrell Mara had a school record-breaking 21-rebound performance to lead the #4 Spartans to an 85-64 win over Brandon on Friday at the Langley Events Centre.
 
Mara also led the Spartans with 20 points as TWU overcame a rocky start to get back in the win column after having its 15-game winning streak snapped last Saturday against Saskatchewan.
  
The win improves TWU’s record to 18-3, while the loss drops Brandon to 4-15 on the year.
 
The Spartans 61 rebounds is also a single game school record, breaking the previous record of 59, which was set against Thompson Rivers Nov. 5, 2010 in a 97-57 win.
 
Brandon’s O’Brian Wallace led his team’s attack with 17 points, but he was the only Bobcat to hit double-digits. Kyrie Coleman and Isaiah James had 10 rebounds each.

CALGARY – Needing a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive as the Canada West season winds down, the Calgary Dinos emerged with a 93-81 victory on Friday over the Manitoba Bisons in the Jack Simpson Gym.
 
Despite seeing a 16-point halftime lead virtually evaporate in the third quarter, the Dinos came out with guns blazing in the fourth as they reestablished their double-digit margin and improved to 7-12 on the season. The Bisons, meanwhile, still hold a two-game lead over Calgary with a 9-10 record on the year.
  
Fourth-year Dinos forward Dustin Reding led the way with a season-high 19 points, while freshman Matt Letkeman put up an efficient 18 on 7-for-8 shooting from the field. Tyler Fidler added 13 to go with 17 boards.
 
Josh Ogden spent plenty of time with the basketball for the Manitoba Bisons on the evening, leading them with a game-high 25 points. Eric Garcia chipped in with 15, while Richard Reimer had 12 points, 14 rebounds.
 
The Dinos will look for their first series sweep of the season when they entertain the Bisons once more Saturday night.

Victoria 72 Thompson Rivers 70

Vikes-WolfPack Stats

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - The Thompson Rivers WolfPack rallied from a 26-15 first quarter deficit only to fall short to the visiting Victoria Vikes, 72-70 at the Tournament Capital Centre.

The WolfPack got a solid game from defending Canada West Defensive Player of the Year Greg Stewart, with 29 points and a game-high 24 rebounds.  Stewart moved into seventh place all-time in Canada West, with 724 career rebounds. Chas Kok had 25 points for TRU.

For Victoria, Ryan MacKinnon led the way with 25 points.  Jeff Spoor had 11 points.

The WolfPack are now 4-17, while the Vikes are 14-7.

The two teams play again on Saturday, 8:00 p.m. at the Tournament Capital Centre.

Winnipeg 88 Fraser Valley 73

Cascades-Wesmen Stats

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen put in one of their best efforts of the season and the results showed. The Wesmen defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades 88-73 in the opening game of a weekend series Friday evening in Winnipeg.
 
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-16. The loss drops the Cascades to 6-13 in the Canada West Conference standings.
 
Fifth-year guard Nick Lother led the Wesmen attack with a game high 27 points, six three pointers and seven assists. Benny Iko had 25 points, eight rebounds.
 
Joel Friesen led Fraser Valley with 23 points. Zeon Gray added 17 points and six assists. Sam Freeman and James Elliott shared the rebounding lead with six.
 
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
