Shaw "Game of the Week" Review: Bears look golden in win at Manitoba

WINNIPEG - On Saturday 11 at University Stadium (University of Manitoba campus) in front of 600 fans, the Manitoba Bisons football team lost their second consecutive game of the 2010 season as the Alberta Golden Bears won by a 31-6 score.

With the victory, the Bears vault into the top spot of the Canada West conference with a perfect 2-0 record in the young conference season and Manitoba is last with a winless 0-2 record.

The third quarter was the turning point as Manitoba decided to take the wind for the fourth quarter and Alberta proceeded to eat up nine minutes of possession and score two touchdowns and a field goal. Canada West Offence Player of the Week QB Julian Marchand found SB Ryan Meraw with a 13 yard TD pass and then RB Matthew Jarvis ran straight up the middle for a 54 TD before kicker Hugh O’ Neill ended another successful Bears’ drive with a 18 yard FG. A game that was 10-6 for Alberta at the half became 27-6 after three and the Bisons never did recover from the third quarter.

Jarvis finished with a game-high 145 rushing yards on 13 carries while Marchand went 13-22 for 169 yards and 2 TDs. Top Alberta receiver was WR Jess Valleau with 92 yards and a 48 yard TD. For Manitoba, RB Matt Henry had his first 100 yard running game with 134 yards on 21 carries and QB Khaleal Williams added 140 passing yards on 14-26 with two interceptions. SB Stu Schollaardt had a game-high 103 receiving yards on eight catches. O’Neill went 3-4 in field goals while Bison rookie Nick Naylor scored the only points for the after a 2-2 game. In the game, Manitoba had a whopping 133 penalty yards to Alberta’s 45.

On defence, Alberta had two sacks, two interceptions and three break-ups and were led by LB Tyler Greenslade with 8.5 tackles (six solo) while LB Duncan Morris added five tackles and S Jason Hetherington registered 4.5 sacks and one interception. The BIsons' top defender was DL Everton Black with 6.5 tackles and LB Thomas Hall with 5.5 tackles and a forced fumble and recovery. S Justin Clayton also had five tackles and one break-up.
