WINNIPEG – The MacEwan Griffins did enough to take a set off the Winnipeg Wesmen, but not enough to take the match as they suffered their 16th loss of the Canada West men's volleyball season on Saturday night after a 3-1 defeat (25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-13).

With the result, Winnipeg completes the weekend sweep and improves to 11-7, while MacEwan falls to 2-16.

Max Vriend took 41 swings in the match and led the way with a game-high 19 kills as veteran MacEwan setter Jonathan Mohler went to the fifth-year outside hitter often in recording 34 assists.

But, as has been a familiar problem for the Griffins this season, they didn't have anyone else going; no other Griffin had more than six kills. Unfortunately, their serving woes from Friday night also carried over as MacEwan notched just three aces against 10 service errors.

In his first career start, middle Zackery Thielmann led the Wesmen with a career-high six aces, while notching five kills on 10 swings.

Ethan Duncan had a team-high 15 kills for the Wesmen, while Daniel Thiessen added 14 kills.

The Griffins will stay on the road next weekend, travelling to Kelowna, B.C. to take on the UBC-Okanagan Heat. Winnipeg is on a bye week, returning to home action against Calgary on Feb. 7-8.
