#WinTheWeb: Basketball playoffs provide fireworks

Every week we look back at the top moments from the past weekend in our #WinTheWeb feature. Here are some of the top moments from February 7-9, 2019.

WBB: Wesmen make long flight worth it

No one wants to fly across the entire conference for a one-game playoff contest, only to lose and fly right back home. So, the Winnipeg Wesmen decided if they were going to make the trek from one end of Canada West to the other, they'd return home with a win. The No. 12 Wesmen scored a major upset over the weekend, downing the No. 5 seed UBC Thunderbirds 67-64 Saturday afternoon in the first round of the conference women's basketball playoffs. UBC head coach Deb Huband was gracious in defeat, giving the Wesmen full marks for the impressive upset.

WBB: Timberwolves earn first CW playoff win

The UNBC Timberwolves women's basketball team earned the first playoff win in program history Friday, using a 12-2 run to close out the game and earn an 80-78 victory over the Trinity Western Spartans. UNBC's dynamic duo of Maria Mongomo and Vasiliki Louka once again led the charge for the TWolves, as Mongomo had a game-high 29 points, while Louka led the game with 13 rebounds. It was pure jubilation for the No. 9 seed as the game clock ran down. UNBC will now face second seeded Calgary in the conference's best-of-three quarter-finals.

WRES: Hildenbrandt delivers the boom

Heavyweight wrestler Brad Hildenbrandt of the UFV Cascades captured his third consecutive Canada West gold medal over the weekend, as the Cascades hosted the 2019 CW Wrestling Championships. Hildenbrandt delivered one of the best takedowns of the event on Friday, as evidenced by the footage above. It was just one of the several crowd pleasing moments from the championships, which saw Alberta (men's) and Saskatchewan (women's) walk away with the conference banners.

MBB: 'Horns add exclamation mark to playoff win

We love slam dunks (who doesn't?), so we're spreading the joy of Eric Pierce's one-handed slam in Lethbridge's 98-65 win over the Victoria Vikes. The No. 7 Pronghorns continue their playoff journey this weekend with a best-of-three quarter-final vs. Alberta.

MHKY: Lange's double-overtime winner

Overtime winners = magic. Here's Sawyer Lange's double-overtime snipe for the Alberta Golden Bears Saturday vs. Calgary. Lange's winner delivered a 5-4 win for the Bears in what was a fitting regular season finale for both teams. The series was a possible conference semifinal preview, as Calgary hosts Lethbridge this weekend in the quarters, while MRU and UBC do battle in the other series. First-place Saskatchewan and second-place Alberta await the winners.
