EDMONTON – The Canada West basketball playoff picture is set, as the conference regular season concluded Saturday night.
The defending Canada West and U SPORTS champion Calgary Dinos enter the playoffs as the top men's seed thanks to their perfect 20-0 regular season, while the Saskatchewan Huskies are the top women's seed after a 16-4 campaign.
Highlights:
-
Calgary (men's) and Saskatchewan (women's) are the top seeds entering the 2019 Canada West basketball playoffs
-
Conference regular season play concluded Saturday night
-
Playoff action opens Thursday, February 7th, as the conference's play-in round begins
Once again this season, ratings performance index (RPI) was used for playoff seeding.
RPI has been used since the 2016-17 campaign to seed playoff teams, while win/loss record is used to determine playoff qualification (top 12 teams qualify). RPI is used to factor in varying strengths of schedules, resulting from the conference's unbalanced schedule.
-
RPI = 35% team winning percentage (WP) x 1.1 away win + 0.9 home win, 40% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponent’s average winning percentage (OOWP).
The top four men's and women's teams, based on RPI, receive a first round bye in the playoffs, while the other eight playoff teams on each side participate in a single elimination play-in game.
Best-of-three quarter-finals and semifinals are then played, with the conference playoffs culminating in one-game Canada West Championships (to be played either March 1st, or 2nd).
