NEW WESTMINSTER – The Trinity Western Spartans are the Canada West men’s and women’s cross country champions, following the U Sports cross country championships Saturday in Quebec City.

TWU’s win on the men’s side was the first in program history, as the Spartans finished with 86 points to top the Canada West standings, finishing second in the overall U Sports standings to the host Laval Rouge et Or (43 pts.).

On the women’s side, Trinity Western’s conference victory marks the fourth consecutive title for the Langley, B.C. school. The Spartans finished third behind Queen’s University (78 pts.) and the Guelph Gryphons (70 pts.), who won their 12th consecutive national title.

Individually, TWU’s Declan White was the top male finisher at the race, which stretched across the Plains of Abraham, as the Spartan finished the 10-kilometre run in a time of 30:56.0 – just behind Laval’s Yves Sikubwabo’s time of 30:51.

Thanks to his finish, White is the 2016 Canada West Male Athlete of the Year.

Taking home the conference’s top women’s honour was Emma Cook-Clarke of Calgary, who completed the women’s six-kilometre course in a time of 21:15.0 to be named the Canada West Female Athlete of the Year.

Like White, Cook-Clarke’s time was good for second overall, behind only Queen’s Claire Summer, who posted a 21:08.4 mark.
