WINNIPEG — One night after ending a losing streak, the Winnipeg Wesmen started a winning one.

Emma Parker had 14 kills and 10 digs, and Ashleigh Laube added 11 and 13 as the Wesmen women's volleyball team finished a weekend sweep of the UBC-Okanagan Heat Saturday with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23) victory at the Duckworth Centre.

It was Laube's third double-double of the season and fourth straight match in double-figure kills while Parker notched her second double-double and third match in four outings with double-digit digs.

Libero Madison Fyvie posted a match-high 17 digs for the Wesmen, who snapped a 25-match losing streak on Friday with a sweep of the Heat. It was the Wesmen's first doubleheader sweep since the team posted two wins against the Manitoba Bisons Feb. 4 and 6, 2016.

"This was the first weekend, and certainly tonight, when we showed guts and an ability to hang in there and not throw in the towel," Wesmen head coach Diane Scott said. "When that has happened before, it wasn't intentional, it's just a courage hadn't been developed. This weekend we sort of found our courage."

The Heat (0-6) were certainly in position to capture more than their one set, holding late leads in both the second and fourth sets, only to watch the Wesmen surge at the last moment. UBCO led Set 2 23-21 before Winnipeg tore off four straight points, and the Heat watched the Wesmen score back-to-back points at 23-23 to finish the match off, capped by a Parker ace.

"I think we showed a bit of fight today for parts of it, so that's promising," Heat head coach Steve Manuel said. "Again, we can't maintain it for long enough and we can't do simple executions when we really have to down the stretch. But we saw a lot more tonight of what we're capable of doing, so there's some positives."

In the fourth set, the Wesmen opened a 10-4 lead only to watch the Heat tear off seven straight points.

"We had an early surge and then we let them back," Scott said, "and ideally those are great lessons because you have to not sit back and relax. You have to keep putting the pedal to the floor."

Aidan Lee and Ann Richards both put up 17 kills to lead the Heat, who hit .207 for the night. Both attackers were effective, as well, with Lee posting a .577 efficiency and Richards .371.
