WVB: Regina takes four-set win over Winnipeg in home opener

REGINA - The University of Regina's women's volleyball team won its home opener in four sets Friday night against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health, and Sport.
 
The Cougars came out strong, winning the first two sets 25-21 and 25-17, respectively. The Wesmen roared back to the third set 25-22, before the Cougars finally dispatched them 25-13 in the final set to win the match.
 
The Cougars (1-2) controlled the match most of the night with a balanced attack and solid defense. Fifth-year Ashlee Sandiford led the way on offence with a match-leading 19 kills and recording a double-double with 13 digs. Emma Matheson and Jessica Lerminiaux each contributed nine kills with Lerminiaux also piling up 19 digs. Satomi Togawa had a match-high 46 assists and added five kills for good measure. Taylor Ungar recorded a match-high 20 digs. Brooklyn Reynolds contributed on both sides with seven kills as well as being involved with six of the team's 10 total blocks.
 
The Wesmen (0-1) got a double-double performance from Ashleigh Laube with 11 kills and 15 digs. Emma Parker added a second double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs. Kalena Schulz had a solid match with eight kills and 10 digs, while Taylor Boughton played well at the net with two solo blocks and contributing in five of the teams 13 blocks.
 
The Cougars face the Wesmen again Saturday evening at 7:00 pm for the second match of the weekend doubleheader.
