REGINA - The University of Regina women's volleyball team missed a chance to clinch a playoff spot after getting swept by the University of Manitoba Bisons Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health, and Sport.

The Cougars didn't lead once all night as Manitoba started strong, winning the first set 25-17. The Bisons' momentum carried over to the second and third set, winning both with an identical score of 25-21. The win helps the Bisons (10-11) stay in the thick of the playoff race as they draw level with Brandon and Mount Royal for a three-way tie for seventh place.

The Bisons controlled the match all night with a strong defence and balanced attack. Manitoba's blocking at the net was dominant with nine total blocks, eight of which involved fourth-year middle Emily Erickson. Kearley Abbott had 10 kills and eight digs while her twin sister Josie had nine kills and 17 digs. Jocelyn Koswin was the most efficient hitter of the night with eight kills and a .438 hitting percentage. Setter Brittany Habing had a match-high 36 assists while chipping in nine digs and three kills. Libero Cassie Bujan added a team-high 18 digs.

For the Cougar offence, Ashlee Sandiford had a match-high 13 kills. Brooklyn Reynolds was solid with seven kills, a .412 hitting percentage and two blocks. Satomi Togawa contributed 30 assists and eight digs while Taylor Ungar led the match with 19 digs. Leah Sywanyk played well off the bench with seven kills and six digs.

The two teams will face off again Saturday evening (7:00) for the second match of the weekend double-header. The Cougars can still lock up a playoff spot with a win.
